I think that would be a great feature to add... did we have that with the old pets system? I can't remember... anyway, I think it's on a list of stuff to add, or at least a list of suggestions... somewhere.

Yep, we have requested it already. I hope they get it added soon. It would be used a lot since the random egg feature is so popular. Its so much easier to name your pet after you get to know them a little. Especially when you don't know what type, sex or color its gonna be.

The color of the egg has to do with what color the pet eventually will be (usually). According to a couple of the people who have been breeding their pets, it's the little spots on the bottom half of the egg that determines gender. I think it's 3 spots on the right = female; 3 spots on the left = male. But I may have it backwards.

When you choose to create a pet, you can choose the gender, color, etc. When you choose to create an egg instead, it's a toss-up on all fronts (gender, color, species)... unless you already have a male pet and a female pet... then you can choose them as the parents. Granted, if they're different species, you still don't really know what species the egg will turn out to be, but if you have two of the same species (male and female) you can breed them together to get an egg of the same species.

You have it right. The color of the spots is the color of the pet. Female spot cluster on the right and male on the left. I've used the same distinction to determine the gender on eggs while setting them up for the worker lists. It has been the same for all the eggs.
