Yeesh. How about instead of gaming the rules, just treating other posters the way you'd want to be treated, and addressing issues instead of personally trashing the people who hold them?

I condone neither calumny or detraction of anyone. I grant you that these candidates have put themselves in the public spotlight because its whats necessary to be elected as we all want to know as much about them as possible.

All our candidates are very fine people, just with some very different ideas.

Those differing ideas should not be cause to send us into screeds against each other as members of the body of Christ.

Its just those screeds which divide us.

How then do we discuss the actions of the candidates or our opinions of them without taking those statements personal?

Its a challenge, but one I think we're called to in the greater ideal of Christianity don't you think?

So... if I were to put up some sig or avatar that intentionally baited the opposing side to my view point, how would I be doing anything different than the dirty tactics of the campaigners.

Shouldn't we be above that eye for an eye nonsense as Christains?

This is a question you have to ask yourself; How do you want to treat your brother or sister if they disagree with you and what does it do to/for me if I do not do so as the Lord would wish?

I think you know the answer.

Politics is not the good fight we're to be fighting, its over our own flesh and with powers and principalities.
I was really hoping for a simple "yes" or "no" to my easy question.

Or Senator Obama’s approach could be followed, whereby prenatal and income support, paid maternity leave and greater access to adoption would be relied upon to reduce the incidence of abortion."

Now that Political Season will be in full swing (all OBOBers please read)

This was originally it's own thread...then I saw Joab had started one. I don't post on Saturday so, I missed it. I merged my thread into this one so we would not have two threads on the same thing.

I wanted to remind people of how the staff views flames in the political context and the other guidelines for OBOB.

These guidelines are not meant to inhibit discussion, only to prevent the amount of flames and flame reports we get during these times. If people have any questions about these please post in this thread and I will try to give you the best answer possible.

Again, this is not to inhibit discussion but rather to cut down on flames, baiting and sensationalism in political threads so we can have really productive discussions.

We know this election in America is of great importance to many people. And that can make it an occasion for dialog, understanding and positive debate between Catholics who span the political spectrum.

But that also means that it is something with great meaning to many people and tempers may flare. So we ask everyone, please note and observe these guidelines and clarifications so we can all have a productive discussion with little or no ill will or rancor. The guidelines:

OBOB is a Catholic sub forum and it is perfectly legitimate for the members to discuss politics. Discussion of the moral and theological concerns that comprise the issues of our day is not only a valid topic…it is necessary for an informed conscience. These matters however must be discussed in a manner that upholds charity.

On these matters the United States Catholic Bishops have said:
We need to support one another as our community of faith defends human life and dignity wherever it is threatened. We are not factions, but one family of faith fulfilling the mission of Jesus Christ.

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States
This applies to all issues covered under the teachings of Catholic Social Justice from conception to natural death.

In order to help foster civil and instructive discussion on political issues and keep with the Bishops view that:
How best to respond to these and other compelling threats to human life and dignity are matters for principled debate and decision.
The staff of OBOB will be using these rules of thumb to enforce the forum rules in political threads. In many respects the rule that is being enforced here is the flaming rule. So the following will be considered in two categories; flames and spite reporting:
  • No broad or inflammatory generalizations of someone’s political beliefs or stances in thread titles
  • Do not report a brother or a sister for simple criticism of or disagreement with a political figure
  • Do not insult a brother or sister because you disagree with a political point of view
  • Do not generalize Republicans as heartless
  • Do not generalize Democrats as against the Church
  • We will give little leeway on spite reporting in these political threads from this point forward
To clarify how this will be enforced we urge our brothers and sisters to remember:

Catholics will not be given notices or have posts deleted for defending the Church. How you choose to do it however is another matter. Flames are flames. Post with charity. Support your arguments. Things might be deleted and notices given for flaming even if you are defending Church teaching.

Catholics will not be given notices or have posts deleted for debating and attempting to make an informed decision on how to vote. However we are still a safe haven in line with the Dogmas of the Church. Direct opposition to and disrespect of those Dogmas is not allowed. Voting Democrat is not considered direct opposition to Church teaching. Do not report people for that.

Above all remember that Abortion will figure greatly in these discussions. Direct promotion of abortion, saying that abortion is just or a right will be dealt with immediately.

We pray as a family that the Holy Spirit guide our debates and discussions as a family.

We pray as a family that Justice, Charity and Truth prevail.

We pray that Joseph, who was just and good, guide our deliberations on Justice.

We Pray that Mary, so full of Charity and Compassion, guide our interactions with each other.

We pray that Jesus Christ, present and with us in the most Holy Eucharist, the source of all Truth and as Truth Himself…guide us in discerning the Truth in all things.

Do we surround mother and child with protection and love, or do we hold out to her the cold comfort of a trip to an abortionist? Where is our true character as a nation to be seen - let's ask ourselves this question: Where is our true character to be seen, in an adoptive home, or in an abortion clinic? Who are we? Who are we America? That question deserves an answer.

Yes. It would be a flame and a generalization. Aside from the totally subjective characterization of what is and is not a liberal, it attributes an insulting belief to a group of people without any distinction. It also baits and flames anyone who self identifies as a liberal but does not support abortion. It also walks the fine line (depending on context) of violating:

Do not generalize Democrats as against the Church

Personally I would rule it a violation. I would defend it's ruling as a violation.

I did not see this thread before I made mine so I could answer anyone's questions. Sorry. I don't post on Saturday since that is one of the few full days I can spend with my wife.

Sorry to duplicate threads. I will merge them so they are in one place

The goal is to address the issues that are in the election with as much fact and as little sensationalism, melodrama and cosmic angst as possible. These things often are backhand flames or baits. So let's just do without them and dialog and debate on the issues.

That is the intention of the rules. In the past we have had massive flame wars and spite reporting on these types of things.

I understand irony and sarcasm and upfront dialog. And I think everyone is capable of doing it within the clarifications. All that is being removed is the option to address these things in a snarky manner or a sensational manner that obscures the point and breeds contention.

Anyone with solid points to present should not be hampered by the rules.

And we posted all this so maybe, moving forward from this point we can have threads that really discuss things and will not need notices, edits, closed down, cool down...because that really derails threads.

No one wants that. All in all things have been fine. We have some threads that are really getting into discussion of things. But tensions rise as the political season goes on and we wanted to get everyone on the same page.

I have even have had people asking for a political sub area of OBOB since the political threads are so prevalent. But honestly the political threads almost always deal with issues that involving learning and exploring the moral dimensions of the Catholic faith so they are teaching and learning threads too.

And if they are civil they can have awesome effect in advancing understanding of the Catholic faith as well as how to talk to each other as fellow Catholics with varied political views and many questions.

If the point is that McCain is similar to Bush or that Obama is soft on things that result in terror then make that point with facts.

To explain, moderation at CF is context based. In most contexts the use of those would be baiting.

Setting my answer aside.

Is that what most people would think? Is that how we as a community would like to proceed?

The effort here is to set a framework for a good dialog and reach an understanding so we have very few violations and as little contention as possible over the next 3 months. That is why I am trying to explain how the rules get enforced and asking if that fits everyone's expectations and desires for discussion.
