That said, this also isn't an issue we lose much sleep over. That we bear God's image and when we obtained it are two completely separate issues, the former being of more importance to CE's than the latter.
There is no living breathing creature that is without a soul. It is not possible. And each created "kind" is the created "spirit" which multiplies itself by the seed created within itself, and forms the body of flesh for the individual soul in the kind to house itself in, at conception of the seed.
Adam is made in the exact bodily image of the Person of God the Word, in his bodily form which is in heaven as the "Son of Man".
The Person of God the Word is the only similitude of YHWH the Living Spirit whom any created being has ever seen, does ever see, or shall ever see.
The Father is never seen, but His Glory dwells in His created sons.
The Person of God the Word is the Great Glory -the Ancient/Head of Days- who was seen in heaven by Enoch, pre-incarnation. And the "Son of Man" who was seen in heaven, hidden [who was with God and who was God and who was to come], was seen by Enoch there as an alter ego/another same self, of God the Great Glory. He was seen in Revelation 5 by John as another same self of the One who sits on the throne there, as the Lamb who was slain.
He was seen as the Similitude of YHWH by Moses, and they spoke "mouth to mouth". Adam is made in His exact "tupos", as Romans 5:14 states. Adam is made in His similitude, as Genesis 1:26-28 states.
It is the body which we wear that is made in the image of the Son of Man, who is the Similitude of God the Great Glory.
Num 12:8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches;
and the similitude of YHWH shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

for Adam's body is made in the image of God the Word -who was to come in flesh and is come in flesh of second creation human being flesh as Kinsman/Redeemer to Adam.
