Demon Hunters

((If you'd like to join this RPG, first read the first two pages of the OOC. Then read as much of the main thread as you can stand, including the character profiles [which will later be listed in the OOC] to make sure you understand the RPG you're looking to join. Some things are pretty flexible, and I welcome creativity, but there should be some consistencies.
Then make a character and post a link to your character thread in the OOC, and wait for me to give the okay. Please do not post here unless you are role playing. Keep all OOC posts in the OOC.

Here's a link to the OOC: http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7236379

Nicholas Hunt arrived home at around 3:15. The house was empty because his dad was still at work, and he didn't get off until 7:00.

He carried his backpack through the living room, right through the hallway, and right again to his room. His backpack made a loud noise as he dropped it to the floor.

"I need to find some things to take out of that thing," he said to himself. "It's gonna throw my back out of place soon."

Suddenly, Nick heard the sound of wings flapping through the wind and felt a breeze surround him. He looked to his window and saw that it was shut. This wasn't the first time this has happened. It's been happening to him all day. Even in his windowless classrooms with the doors closed, he's felt this weird sensation like someone was watching. And even stranger, he'd look around and no one else seems to notice.

He thought he caught something in the corner of his eye, standing by the door. He stared at the spot and a figure began to become clear to him. It was a large man dressed in a white robe and a silver belt. Light radiated from him. He was equipped with a sword in a hilt.

Nick fell on his back and rubbed his eyes, expecting the man to disappear.

"Don't be afraid, Nicholas," the man said. "I am Orpheus, your guardian angel. I have been sent to deliver a message for you."

Nicholas didn't respond, but waited for the angel to continue.

"You are aware, Nicholas, that their are spiritual battles being fought around you," said Orpheus. "You know that we angels are constantly fighting Beelzebub's demons. But now you are being offered a chance to battle demons in a different way. Today, you resist the demons and battle them with the Word. But, should you accept this offer, you will learn to battle with a different kind of sword in the world unseen. But these demons will also have the power to harm you, so it would be a risk for you. But if you learn to put your trust in the right place, there are never any risks."

Orpheus reached into his purse (a pouch that was used before the wallet was invented) and pulled out a adamant sword on a silver chain.

"If you decide to take this offer, just touch the adamant sword on this chain, and you will be transported to the world unseen. Take some time to think about it."

Orpheus placed the chain on Nick's dresser and disappeared from sight.

Nick slowly lifted himself back to his feet. He grabbed the chain and looked into the adamant sword. Careful not to touch the sword, he put it in his pocket. He walked out to the backyard and sat down on the grass.

"Would it be crazier to take the chance, or never try?" he said to himself. He pulled out the chain and looked again to the sword. Then he knew what he wanted to do. He stood to his feet, took a deep breath and grabbed the sword. Suddenly the sword expanded to a huge, two-handed, double-edge sword, which dropped immediately from his hands to the ground.

"Heavy, isn't it?" said Orpheus.

Nicholas turned around and saw that his house was gone. He was standing on a field with a few towers in the distance here and there. There were some unfamiliar plants here and there, and some strange looking animals moving around. It looked like he had suddenly travelled to into an unexplored portion of the world.

"Is this still earth?" Nicholas asked.

"Well, yes, and no. You see, this is sort of like a world in between the heavenly relms and the earth. It isn't quite earth, not quite heaven, but there are some parallels between both worlds here. We simply call it the world unseen. Every human ever born dwells here, but they don't always know it."

"What am I here for?"

"See these towers? Each one belongs to a human soul who still lives on the earth. Your mission is to visit these towers and ward off the demons that live there. But remember, you must never visit your own tower. Entering into your own soul like that could result in unusual side-effects. I don't know exactly what would happen, but I promise you it wouldn't be pleasant."

"Am I supposed to fight them with this?" Nicholas said as he tried to lift the sword and couldn't.

"Stop trying to move the sword, and let the sword move you."

"What?"

"Just try it."

Nicholas closed his eyes, and immediately the sword lifted into the air and nearly pulled him off the ground, but then he opened his eyes and the tip of the sword dropped to the ground again.

"Pretty good for a first try. Now don't forget to trust your sword. Don't forget that its powers are not your own."

"It has powers?"

"Yes. But don't ask me what they are; I didn't forge the sword. Just listen to its voice, and it will tell you."

"Are you saying that this sword is alive?"

"In a way, yes."

Nicholas lifted the sword and looked through the rainbow colors refracting from it. He could almost hear it speaking to him. "So what now?"

"Now, you will fight your first demon."

"Already? But I'm not--"

"Don't worry. This demon is weak. You can take him. Now excuse me for a moment. I've got to let the others know the choice you made."

Orpheus whistled and a medium size bird of rainbow color flew down to rest on the angel's forearm. The largest feathers were on its head. From one side to the other, each of these six feathers made up the color spectrum from violet to red.

The bird whistled in reponse. Then the angel whistled again to the bird, which seemed to understand what the angel was saying, and flew off.

Orpheus saw the confusion on Nick's face, so he explained, "That's a rainbow pheonix. We angels of God use them as messengers. By the way, watch for the black pheonix. They belong to Beelzebub's army. If you happen to see one before it detects you, turn back. Those things are only sent out when Beelzebub wants somebody killed, or in the case of angels, captured. Now, you'd better be on your way. Head over the the white tower to the South. But feel free to explore on your way there. Even the flowers will prove useful to you."

Nathan seemed to be sit attentively before a computer, analyzing and learning information from the vast internet. Occasionally scrolling down on the page, he appeared to be a complete average student, albeit a serious one.

In truth, he could not care less. On the computer showed nothing but the homepage of a site the previous user had neglected to close out of. Nathan was bored. More than that, he has had the eerie sensation of being watched at random intervals during the day. It had always happened when he was surrounded by people...

Finally giving into his boredom, he shut down the computer, succeeding where the last user had failed. He walked out of the college's library, down roads leading to his house. Abruptly, the sound of rustling feathers caught his ear and he paused. Looking into the air, he saw nothing. Returning his attention to walking home, something that was not present before lay in the road before him.

He looked around, he saw no one. Again looking in the air, he thought he saw something white before it disappeared from sight as well.

Sighing, he looked at the object. An envelope... inside was a simple letter. Opening the letter a odd looking stick on a chain fell to the road. Picking it up by the chain, the shape drew cognizance. A double sides halberd... Who's was this? Looking into the letter for answers, this is what he found:

"Hey Nathan, do you ever go home? I've been waiting all day, but you never left the company of others... And you are not even doing anything worthwhile! Anyways, this is your adamant weapon, which will deliver you to the World Unseen, if you decide to accept it. Just grasp the halberd and you'll be there. Go to a tower, but watch out for strong demons... I suggest going after a smaller one... By the way, your weapon is more than just a weapon. Learn to communicate and work with it and you'll be fine. Good luck! Your Guardian Angel."

Nathan closed the letter, weighing his options. Should I just toss the thing? This sounds ridiculous, is this a prank? How else would they know my name... unless they really did watch him all day. Was this the source of the odd being watched feeling?

Without another thought, he grasped the halberd in his hands. Why not? He thought to himself. Suddenly, the road and buildings vanished. Instead stood several towers in the distance, and he apparently stood in a field. He recognized none of the floral or fauna. Were they the demons the letter spoke of? Looking at the now full sized halberd in his hands, he somehow knew they were not. The difference in weight had not even registered... it appears my weapon training was more than just exercise after all...

Not exactly sure of what was going on, he ventured forth toward the tower that appeared to be the closest. Maybe someone inside could give him some more answers...

((Is this good? I can change some of it if needed. I just had the Guardian Angel act like that since he has not really needed to "guard" Nathan throughout his life due to the absence of tragedy and his almost perfect apathy...))

((I actually liked the letter idea, but it all seemed a bit rushed. Don't try to just jump from point to point. Sometimes it's more interesting to take things slowly and include more detail for realism.))

Nicholas hiked his way to the closest tower. But hours passed and the tower didn't seem to be getting much closer. He stopped to take a rest and noticed a patch of odd flowers where he was sitting. The stems were deep yellow and the petals were green and both curved in a lightning-like pattern. But the odd thing was when they moved, there were mirage images left behind.

He saw an insect land on one and then disappear suddenly without a trace. Nicholas grabbed one, smelled it aroma, and suddenly the environment around him was rushing past him like a bullet. A few seconds later, it stopped with the tower standing right in front of him. The words his angel spoke to him before he left suddenly made sense. The flower had given him a shortcut to his destination.

Up close, the white tower seemed to be in bad shape. The brick walls around the tower were cracked and worn out, and there were plants growing on them.

Nicholas walked up to the tower gate which appeared to be locked. So he took his sword and broke the lock. Inside, the tower wasn't in any greater shape, but it was still amazing to look at. There were some buildings with various themes, some of which had an odd mark on the doors. Nicholas wondered what parallels these could have with earth and figured, "They're probably this person's interests or something. I doubt that anyone lives here."

Nicholas walked looked up. The tower was amazingly high. Of course, the demon must be on the top floor. He walked through the door and down the hallway, which led to a circular room with stairs. Although there were doorways in this room as well, Nicholas walked up the stairs to the place where he figured the demon would most likely be.

It took a while, but he made it. The top floor of the tower. There was still no sign of the demon, and the only place to go from this floor, was to the roof. There was a ladder on the wall, leading to the trap door on the ceiling. Nicholas climbed and realized that there was a mark on the door, just like the mark on the houses. It looked like some kind of an ancient language.

Nicholas slowly opened the trap door and climbed up. At first, he thought there was nothing there, but then he heard the snoring sound behind him and turned to see an angel, bent and with his wings curled around him.

Nicholas made a sigh of relief and touched the angel to arouse him. The angel rose suddenly, alarmed by his unexpected guest, knocking Nicholas to the floor. He had blonde hair, tan skin, dark eyes, and was dressed in brown leather armor.

"Who are you?" he asked in his loud, booming voice. "You look like a human, but you can't be. Humans can't come here."

Then Nicholas saw the burned mark on the angel's forehead. It matched the mark on the doors. "You're the demon?"

"Name's Gorge," the demon replied. "And yes, I am a demon. And judging from your ignorance of the demon's decieving appearance, I'm guessing that you are indeed human. I'm going to enjoy feasting on your flesh, mortal."

The demon pulled out two katanas and began to circle around Nicholas.

"You've obviously very little fighting experience," Gorge said. "This won't take long."

The demon lauched his attack, but Nicholas managed to lift his sword to block it. The sword was heavy again, but before he had time to remember why, another attack was launched at him. The demon was fast, and he wasn't giving him any time to think.

The demon cornered Nicholas to the edge. Looking down, Nicholas began to feel dizzy.

Lillian Davis walked down the old sidewalk that led to her house. She thought about the lesson last Sunday. The one about how you should shine god before the world. Her youth minister had said, "If you shine people will notice. People will wonder 'how is it that he is able to pull through with a smile' or 'how is it that she can still be nice to me even after all the terrible things I've done to her'. And then, You can give them an answer." Lilly had been doing her best, and she knew god was helping her, for she has had Shine by Newsboys stuck in her head all week. She started humming it as she walked. Then she stopped. Had she just heard wings? She continued walking then she heard it again. She turned around.

"Who's there?" she said nervously. She looked at her side and saw a flash of white. She continued on walking humming Shine again, though very cautiously. All of a sudden an angel appeared in front of her. She had white armor on with golden trim and a sword at her side. Lilly screamed a little scream of shock. She caught her breath and started backing away slowly.

"Who...who are you?" Lilly asked nervously.

"Do not fear. I am Mayleen your guardian angel" the angel responded. "I have a message for you. You know about spiritual warfare?" Lilly stopped backing away and gave her a blank face.

"Well you are fighting against demons every single time you are tempted. Every single time you want to lie to cover up something you did. But did you know that there is a realm between Heaven and Earth? In that realm real battles are taking place. Well I have come to tell you that God is giving you a chance to be a part of that battle. Of course if you accept you will be in grave danger." Mayleen said pausing for a response.

Lilly gave her another blank stare.

"Very well. If you decide that you will do it just touch the adamant sword." Mayleen said handing her a adamant sword on a chain.

Lilly took it without touching the sword and examined it. it seemed to glow with a blue hue, not like a light bulb but more like a blue light reflecting off of it. She looked in front of her. Mayleen was gone. She put the chain in her pocket and continued walking home.

Nathan continued walking, his halberd fastened by his belt he had repositioned. The weapon amused him greatly. It was made of a material he could not define, and it did not seem as heavy as it was strong. It seemed to radiate light from the crescent blades fixated on either side, and even the counter-weight and spear point at the tip seem surprisingly resilient and sturdy. It was a Chinese style of Halberd, often referred to as a Ji, yet lacked the trademark red plume of hair. Why was this his weapon? Was it fate, or something more? Thoughts swirled around his head as he closed in on a nearby tower. He was becoming travel weary, yet had no method of respite except sitting in the field, devoid of any signs of life besides odd creatures and plants. He resolved to try and remain separate from them, unsure of possible danger.

As several hours passed, Nathan grew more impatient. He knew not what the meaning of any of this was... much less why he had to fight a demon of all things. How was he supposed to even return to the real world? His Guardian Angel, whoever he may be, certainly failed in properly briefing Nathan...

After a few more hours, Nathan had finally arrived at in the surrounding area of his destination. The tower still a ways in the distance, behind a gate, appeared simple enough, the houses surrounding it seemed far more aesthetic. Was this really where the demon resided? It appeared more likely that normal humans lived here. The only unsettling factor was an odd symbol standing clear and articulate upon several doors... Overcome with irritation, he wasted no more time looking around. If it was anything similar to his weapon, it may be stronger than it appeared. Rather, he hoisted himself up by the many wrungs that composed the intricate design that adorned the gate. The symbol seemed forced, as if it was bent into existence after the gate had been placed... who could ahve such strength? The demon...? After ascending past the halfway mark of the strange gate, his stomach flipped. The design was the same that adorned the several houses... yet this one was much less artistic. Rather than an artist, it appeared a brute smashed the same design into being with a rock instead of a paintbrush. Where the metal had been bent the gate was rusted, and it appeared to be slowly getting worse.

By the time Nathan reached the apex of the gate, he quickly threw himself over the top, catching the other side. However, he had been far to hasty. In the odd angle he had assumed, his halberd, his Ji, tumbled out. Trying to catch it before it fell, a gash appeared on his forearm as the weapon continued downwards. He slowly let himself lower down the gate, as if it were a twisted ladder. He tried to ignore the pain, but the constant motion only worsened the situation. When he had reached his limit, Nathan decided to take his chances and fall the rest of the way. It was not too far down, yet his legs shook as they made impact. He was just glad he did not break his legs... that would certainly mean death on this side of the gate.

After laying down where he had landed for a moment, he mustered the strength to carry on. He picked the weapon off the ground, dusting it off. Testing the weight in either hand, he quickly learned his forearm disabled all excessive movements. Could he even take on a demon in this condition?

I don't really have a choice... If I wait, it could find me when my guard is down... I do not even know if those houses are inhabited, or if they are hostile or not if indeed people do live there...

Walking forward, bypassing all houses on the way, Nathan reached the tower. He stepped inside, unsure of what to do exactly. As his vision adjusted to the sudden lack of light, he could make out his surroundings. The same unsettling symbol, in the same fashion as the one on the gate, were apparent on several walls, on tables, on the floor. Several of the symbols were so jagged and obscure he could only guess that they were the same. Holding his halberd securely, he did what he thought of first.

"Demon! Come out and die! I have come to end your existence."

A loud laugh reverberated through the tower, as a door opened and a figure stood in the shadows. He leaped the long distance down from a nearby balcony or alcove, ignoring the stairs. As his massive body came into view, he seemed less evil than... angelic. Wings laying against his back, long hair disheveled and mangled hanging before his face.

"I know what you want! You want to do it again, don't you!? I've beat you to it! I already did it all over the place! You have nowhere else to do it! Hahahaha!"

The laugh was uneven and disturbing, both matching and contrasting his angelic yet unkempt appearance. Not sure of what "do it again" or what "it" was, Nathan spoke a question, more out of confusion than boldness, yet the look was the same.

"Have you already defeated the demon? Are you the Angel that gave me this halberd? Who are you? As each question was asked, Nathan grew more irritated, asking the next and final question in more of a yell than a voice, "What am I doing here!?"

The demon looked at him with hunger in his eyes.

"Look at you," he said. "You can't even hold your sword up. Well, at least that thing will look nice up on my wall."

Then the demon changed shape and became a bear-sized saber-tooth tiger.

Nick bowed his head in prayer. "God, help me!"

The demon pounced, but then the sword lifted itself into the air, cutting the demon and throwing him off the tower. The demon changed back into its regular shape and caught himself before he hit the ground. He landed, grabbing the wound from his chest to his jaw.

"This isn't over," he said. "You can't kill me, but I can kill you. I'll find you human. And next time, I won't underestimate you."

With that, the demon disappeared like dust blowing in the wind.

Nicholas fell to his knees. Tears filled his eyes from relief. Then a couple of feet landed in front of him. Nicholas grabbed his sword, ready to attack. But when he looked up he saw the face of his guardian angel Orpheus.

"Well done, Nicholas!" he said, kneeling almost to his level. "I admit, I was quite worried when you forgot to let your sword move you instead of the other way around, but I'm glad I didn't intervene."

"Can I go home now?"

Orpheus laughed. "Of course! Take a good break. Now take the chain from your right pocket."

Nicholas reached into his pocket and pulled out the chain. Then Orpheus moved Nick's hand to the chain touched the sword. The sword reacted with a flash of light. When the light was gone, Nicholas was back in his backyard.

Then he put the chain, which now had his sword attached to it again, back into his pocket.

Nick laughed to himself, "Dad would never believe this."

Lillian burst through the door of her house.

"I'm home!" she shouted. Her dad came out of the kitchen grilling fork in hand.

"Where have you been? I was worried sick!" he said.

"Dad, I'm only ten minutes later than usual" Lilly responded.

"Where were you?" he asked her.

"I was walking home as usual" she answered him.

"Ok, well...Supper will be ready in an hour. Do you have homework?"

"Yeah, I have math homework and some from history class."

"Ok. Go to it."

"Ok." Lilly gave him a hug and ran upstairs to her room. She dropped her backpack with a thump and pulled the Adamant Weapon out of her pocket. She saw how intricately made it was. The cross piece was slightly curved and the handle was wrapped in leather. There was a crystal set in the center running down the length of the blade. even in her room it still glowed as if reflecting a blue light. She carefully set it down on the desk and started on her homework. She couldn't stop glancing over at it. Finnally she heard her father's voice shout, "Supper".

After supper she made her decision. She picked up the chain and touched the sword with the tip of her finger. She looked around her. It appeared that she was a mountain. The sword that was once small was now large. It glowed with the same glow as before.

"I'm glad you chose to accept" said a voice behind her. She turned around to find that Mayleen was there.

"Mayleen! Where am I? What is this place? How do I gt back home? Where...." Lilly said flustered.

"It's ok. I know you probably have a lot of questions" Mayleen interrupted, "Let's start with one. This is the world unseen..."

"You mean the one you were telling me about?"

"Yes. In this world there is a tower for every human soul on earth. Your job is to ward off the demons who live in these towers."

"How do I do that?"

"You fight them. That's why I warned you that you would be risking your life"

"Oh"

"I will answer more questions later. Right now you get to fight your first demon"

"What? My first demon? But I've never had practice with a sword! I've never even seen or touched one till now!"

"You will be fine. It's a very weak demon. I know you will do fine. Now off with you. Go fight some demons. Oh and remember, some things aren't always what they seem" Mayleen said. Then she flew away.

"An angel? I am an angel? No, you're the angel. I'll kill you, and do it again. I'll use your blood. I'll do what you did to me all over this tower. This place belongs to me!"

Nathan took a step back from the figure before him, thoroughly confused. The only thing that was clear was this winged man was not an ally.

The madman shifted his body, contorting into various shapes before settling on what seemed to be remniscient of a gorilla. In his hands a ragged piece of metal shone dully. It was warped from use and rust. He brought the metal chunk down onto the stone floor loudly, and began violently engraving something onto the floor. Only seeing a portion of it, he knew what it had to be.

This thing... it must be the demon!

As his revelation took place, the demon jerked his head towards Nathan, and Nathan had his confirmation. The same mark was burned onto his forehead. All Nathan could assume was perhaps the mark drove him mad, seeing it on the houses... so he tried to mark everything with the symbol before the one who burned him did... including the gate.

"You're dead, I'll draw it into your body! I'll use your blood!"

Nathan could barely dodge as the beast charged recklessly towards him. Trying to turn and grasp Nathan, the demon lost his balance and fell to his side. Using the moment, Nathan brought the halberd onto the monster's arm. Blood flooded from the wound, yet the hand clasping the metal piece swung at Nathan. In the momen'ts eye, he knew he was dead. He could not possibly react fast enough. Glancing at his weapon, he gave himself up to it.

Within the moment, the halberd lost the weight it had previously sported. It moved without Nathan's consent, blocking the lethal blow with the flat side of the top. The motion startled Nathan, and some sort of repulsion took over him. He took several steps back, unsure of what had happened. As the halberd regained its weight, the demon charged again, but this time Nathan was prepared. The demon was too careless, throwing his weight everywhere and just holding his weapon in front of him.

As he came down on Nathan, he charged forward as well. By surprising the confused demon, he was able to dodge his reflex sweep of his arm and deal a two=hit blow on his legs. He arched the crescent blade deep into the flesh of one leg, and used to counter weight on the other side to impact his kneecap. The movements caused a red flash of pain in his forearm, and he dropped his halberd. The beast's momentum was the only thing preventing him from crushing Nathan.

Nathan's plan moved on without another hitch, everything went according to how Nathan had wanted it. The hand clutching the ragged cluster of steel was instinctively used to stop himself from falling, horribly lacerating his hand. With the coup de grace being his reflex of trying to pull his hand away, pulling his falling body straight onto the metal obstruction. As the demon choked in agony, it looked more afraid than sad. As if it truly did not know what was happening.

Out of mercy for the twisted monster before him, he brought the blade down on his neck, freeing him from his slow and painful death.

"Aye... Did not think you'd be so soft in the end. With your usual attitude, I figured you'd just leave him to suffer."

Nathan spun around to meet the new voice, unsure if it was another demon or foe of another sort. The cloak of white assured him otherwise. The figure stood, or rather slouched with slightly unkempt short hair and a spear fastened by a proper holster onto his back. He appeared to be tired, and waved his hands lazily while beginnning to speak. As Nathan took this in, his suspicion was replaced with anger. He raised the halberd high, pointing it menacingly at the newcomer. He had not noticed that he had used his injured arm, the pain seemed non-existent. He barked at him, easily cutting the stranger off.

"You gave this Adamant Halberd to me! You sent me here to fight this... thing! Who do you think you are!?"

"Haha, inquisitive aren't we? I am Gareth, your Guardian Angel, and you have been given a chance to fight demons in the World Unseen. Isn't it obvious? Although your fight tactics were a bit... unorthodox. Why did you fight the weapon when it guided you? It has feelings too and all that. You're an odd one... Anyway, we thought a chance to fight would absolve you of your less than honorable perception of humanity. You thought they were pathetic and weak against temptation, so now you fight the source of their temptation. That demon was flooding some human with temptations and thoughts of sin. You just saved him or her. Isn't that great!? Oh, and is your arm ok?"

With that mention, Nathan noticed what Gareth was referencing. The pain suddenly returned, and he again re-holstered his halberd as he held his arm in pain. As an unseen bonus, he suddenly felt very fatigued. Was it simply from the absence of adrenaline?

"Why me? Why did you not tell me about this before! Why did you not confront me with this in person instead of hiding behind a letter? I truly resent being used like this. Gareth, I have no place in your pathetic war! Let the demons live in their towers, and have the people fight temptation with strength instead of relying on others!"

In his dramatic gestures, he accidently knocked the chain that had previously been connected to his halberd out of his breast pocket. Trying to catch it with his bad arm, he grasped the metal chain and recoiled in pain, making contact with the adamant weapon on his back. Suddenly, the chain was slightly heavier with the halberd again attached.

Looking around, he quickly realized he had left the World Unseen...
