We are saved by grace alone because of Christ's death on the cross, through faith working in love.
Catholics believe in salvation by grace alone, just not that it happens through faith alone, because faith without works is dead. We believe that the good works that God asks for must be done under grace and out of love, not to 'earn something'.
In short, yes we believe in salvation because of Jesus' sacrifice and we don't believe we can earn our way into heaven... but since faith is more than intellectual belief, it is an active thing, it's when we love the Lord and try to obey His commands...
we were saved, we are saved, and we are being saved, and we are working out our salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in us.
God bless

edit: I found this on the internet which sort of says the same thing:
"We are saved by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Faith, however, is more than an activity of the mind; it must express itself outwardly. In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus tells a parable about the final judgment, saying that some people are saved because of their actions and other people are condemned for failing to act. Those who are saved do not “earn” their salvation by good works. Their works of mercy simply reflect a cooperation with God’s sovereign, saving grace. Those who are condemned presumably failed to cooperate with that same grace." http://www.americancatholic.org/Mess...Wiseman.asp#F1

wigg, I re-read your question, yes, we are saved by Grace alone . . . but we must cooperate with that grace, and this is where working out your own salvation in fear and trembling comes from, for we are not saved until we die and then only if we die in God's friendship.
I should have been more clear. Monica answered well.
If we try to work out our salvation without Grace, nothing will avail us.
If we just sit passively by, and think Grace is going to do it all by itself, then Grace will not avail us.
God enjoins our cooperation with His Grace, giving us Grace to cooperate with His Grace. Salvation is a cooperative effort, with God making it all possible through His Grace.

Yes, that has always been the teaching of The Church. We are saved by God's free gift of grace, through faith working in love. The best way to understand these things is to get The Catechism of The Catholic Church. It will show you the bible verses related to these things.
Your Servant in Christ.
