I know this has been discussed ad infinitum, but I need it clear in my head.
If the flood never happened, either globally or locally, what did the story in the Bible refer to? If it was a metaphor, would somebody please spell out to me what that is? I would sure appreciate it.

It did happen.
If it did happen it was a local flood. The flood of Noah as a global flood has been falsified by

and other branches of science. The global flood has not been taken seriously as a scientific hypothesis since the work of Agassiz in the mid 19th century.
But the question on this thread was indeed rhetorical so it doesn't matter to the question whether or not there actually was a large local flood that was recorded as the flood of Noah.

I just wanted to hear what the metaphor argument was. However, I found lucaspa's theology argument in that same thread more satisfying.
