I would let them watch the Simpsons because it's the best show ever made, and it's good to introduce them early so that imagining the children in question are mine, they can understand their mother, seeing as a good percentage of the things I say are Simpson's references.
The Simpsons and Kind of the Hill are both family oriented shows. not KIDS shows, but not really offensive in any way. I don't think a three year old should be watching very much TV, and that most of it SHOULD be educational (though as a kid I learned a ton of stuff from the Simpsons, that and Muppet Babies, is were I acquired my vast knowledge of pop culture. I would amaze adults, srsly...).
Family guy though is another story. It's fine for adults, but I wouldn't let a child watch it. It's in a totally different cateogory as far as appropriateness goes. While I consider KOTH and The Simpsons to be "family shows" Family Guy and south Park are definitely Adults only.

I'd let a child watch The Simpsons, but not Family Guy. As for King of the Hill, I'm not very familiar with it, and the episodes I have seen weren't very interesting or amusing to me, so I probably wouldn't want anybody watching it near me because I wouldn't want to listen to it.

A friend was telling me that her 3yr. old dd like those cartoons, especially Family Guy. I am not sure how often she watches them but there are some cartoons that are not meant for young children.
oh my...
I'd so not be comfortable with that. We don't even watch Family guy!
I wasn't allowed to watch the Simpsons until I was in my teens.. and I didn't "catch on" to King of the Hill until the last three years... I'd certainly not want someone in my care under the age of 12 watching either of those two... and the third... well that one's just a no-go in our home.

Any of you in your early 20's probably remember when the general consecus among parents was that "The Simpsons" was "bad". My mom didn't allow us to watch it either, but we usually would now and then. When she actually sat down and watched it with us she liked it.
I think the big thing was some parents though Bart had a "bad attitude", though any Simpsons fan knows the show is not about Bart anyway (though in the early 90's he was the most popular character). Bart could/can be a handful sometime, but the show, always made/makes it clear that he has a good heart, his actions have consequences, and he learns his lesson. Plus it's pretty clear that his behavior is caused by the way Homer acts towards him.
I think people were offended that The Simpsons were, in a lot of ways "realistic" and not like the family on "Leave it to Beaver", but really I think the latter is worse for children to see, because it sets up a lot of unrealistic expectations about what "family" is and should be. The Simpsons love each other, but they're not perfect. I think once (my generations) parents saw this they embraced the show a lot more.

There are lots of "adult" tv shows our kids watch with us . . . . We don't watch these, so neither do our children. When a show geared for adults or older teens is on our tv, hubby & I are there to filter it for the kids.

I have never watched Family Guy or King of the Hill - but I certainly would not let a 3 year old watch the Simpsons. I like the show myself but there is a huge amount of adult content and I don't think their attitudes are often good. They go to church but appear not to be practising christians, not good viewing for one so impressionable, who copies everything.
