Butter and hard margarine are equally (un)healthy; margarine has vegetable fats but not of the healthy variety, except in case of a soft margarine which you can't use for baking or any cooking, only to spread out on bread. Liquid margarine is healthier for the arteries than butter but you can't use it for baking.
I agree with Nostalgic Granny that butter has a bad reputation; margarine has all those vitamins added, right? Well, butter already has those vitamins naturally.
I prefer olive oil in the kitchen over margarine (I never have margarine in the house) because that's even healthier; for baking I use butter, and sometimes I add a bit of butter to the olive oil when cooking meat or fish, to improve the taste (even though olive oil is tasty, too). It tastes much better than margarine. Margarine is cheaper but my foodie tastebuds see it as inferior so it's worth it to spend a bit more on butter IMO.
unsalted butter. Tis the only thing worth keeping on hand. Tastes better than margarine or salted butter for spreading on bread and is what one should use when cooking with butter. Mmm, unsalted butter on a nice piece of bread. How delicious!
We use butter. I don't trust margarine at all. If I was feeling really energetic, I could go buy fresh milk from a farmer and make butter. We don't eat much really. Probably two pounds per year for five people...and most of that in cookies.
I actually use both. If its just for cooking, like mac n cheese, I use margarine. But if its something where I want a good butter flavor, like cookies, then I use the real stuff! Sometimes we will visit the Amish farm and buy some of their butter, it has a really unique taste! (And I think its safe to say its organic as well )

Margarin-golden canola-this is not the best margarin around and i cannot stand the taste of real butter- its revolting. according to what good for you, Butter is worse for your health and increases your colestrol. Margarin with the chloestrol reducing plant sterile, is alot better for your health. We have use margarin to cook with too. we tried Olive Oil margarin, but it taste revolting.

Recent studies have shown that reducing the intake of cholesterol rich foods has no real bearing at all on cholesterol levels in the body. Your body makes cholesterol to repair tears in harden arteries, which is probably a result of a bad diet in other ways, but not by the added cholesterol in the diet. Also, cholesterol is a precursor to testosterone production in men. Men who lower their cholesterol levels by 20% could have a 600% drop in testosterone production.
My family has had milking goats for years and the healthiest people with the cleanest arteries in my family are the ones who use raw milk products, including butter. Unnatural trans fats are far more determined to a person's health than cholesterol found naturally in foods. However, it should be noted that pasteurized milk does not have the health benefits of raw milk.
I guess it is just a matter of personal opinion. I have read studies that debunk the margerine is better for you theory. The same studies also claim there are some valid health benifits to using real butter. I think moderation is the key. Try not to glob it on.
BTW if you tasted real butter and it was revolting perhaps you got a rancid batch. Unlike margerine with all those preservatives real butter can go bad fairly easily.
