Ignorance is bliss indeed!

While discussing evolution along with others, a particular woman brought a confusing ideology to me. She stated the following:

"Evolution functions like Hinduism. Death brings forth reincarnated forms."

Now, this was at least somewhat rational, but she continued:

"Thus, if you die, you become an animal again."

She argued that evolution was nothing more than hinduism. In her opinion, evolution equated to hinduism, because both premoted higher forms. Thus, it is obvious that it is inevitable that both are identical to the other.

Now, after she had stated this, a thought ran through my head:

"Your ignorance is showing!"

I replied that she was making a logical error: the fallacy of equivocation. I told her that evolution was a scientific theory, hinduism is a religious belief.

She said in return: "Show me your evidence tomorrow then!"

How can I deal with someone who makes such errors?

Very, very calmly explain to her: In order for evolution to function, a creature must be ALIVE. Death in and of itself has no bearing on evolution (except for the "those who can't adapt die off" part). Also, you may just have to accept that she will continue to be illogical and find some way to refute and debase every last one of your arguments. In fact, some people respond by keeping their argument exactly the same - just repeating it much LOUDER than before. I have had to deal with similar people before. Although I advise you to try and show her the errors she is making, she may refuse to accept that she is wrong. Perhaps if you know someone who is Hindu, you could ask him or her to explain it to this woman?

Yes, I do, but I don't think that he could be counted. You have a point though, perhaps I can discuss this with you tomorrow.

Note to Krichevskoy : There is a barn in Farmer Johansen's silo. Hummingbirds hit windows.

Note to Talcos: A pidgeon has no need for keys. It opens doors with its song.

The aphorism that came to my mind was that it is useless to teach a pig to sing, it doesn't work and only annoys the pig. But I don't know the person, and they might actually be receptive and not as pridefully stubborn as many here.

Death and pain is something good that God created. He used it for evolution to make this wonderful universe.

I can't wait to go to heaven and see the angels with missing limbs because they were bit off by sharks and other animals in heaven. God is awesome! I hope we still get cancer and other diseases in heaven and I don't want any of you YEC to try and say I am being sacreligious. It has been proven God used evolution. It is good. And there is no reason why God would suddenly change what is good and get rid of it in the new heaven and new earth so get used to it now.

Personally I think you might be the ignorant one...that is not really listening to what she is saying.

from your quote of hers: Evolution functions like Hinduism. Death brings forth reincarnated forms.

She only stated that Evolution functions like Hinduism. You then said she said "because both premoted higher forms"

How is that wrong?

Can we please discuss these topics with a modicum of dignity and respect? Hurling insults at each other is not only against our rules, it is very unChristlike. We are not here to bash each other over the heads with our own views and beliefs. Nor are we here to belittle those who don't agree with our views. We are all here as equals, sitting at the round table of discussion. Here, each views and beliefs are just as valid and equal as the others'. Here, we should be able to learn from each other, as brothers and sisters in Christ, to edify others, and be edified by others. If anyone here wants to belittle others, hurl insults, or use this fora as a bully-pulpit or lectern, you are on the wrong website.

So please, let's discuss our differences with an honest attitude to be helpful to others, a willingness to learn from others, and the love of Christ towards each other.
