The Government can not tell the People what to believe. If they did, we would become a facist state which would be far worse for the US.
As it stands, the only reasion why the Government would even care about Creationism is because Creationists can vote and politicians want them to vote 'em into office.

So far, all legal efforts to teach creationism have failed, which does imply that the "US government" is not OK with teaching it.
The objections seem to be coming mainly from 'local' government, not from 'central' government,
'And to what extent can the US government decide this?' they had no trouble finding an excuse to destroy Iraq,
perhaps there are too many 'Religious sympathisers' in central government.

A sensible government does not 'tell' the people what to believe, it steers them in the direction it want's the people to go, like destroying Iraq,
they were able to make the American people believe that a war with Iraq was the only way to go, (as did the British government)
and you can believe it, there is more than one way to run 'a Fascist state'.
You are right about the politicians and voting, politicians know which side there bread is buttered.
If the US government wanted to get rid of creationism they could, they could start a campaign to
ridicule creationism to a point where it would never again be mentioned without being laughed at.
They need only say it's 'Un American', wrap themselves in the flag, and creationism would die, (like communism)
so it must obviously suit their purpose to keep things as they are.
I don't know who said this but it's true,
"If we keep the people thinking and talking about something else, we can do as we please."
Manipulation is the name of the game, in fact it's the only game in town,
and religion is a manipulative tool used by governments and politicians all over the world.
