He didn't know how long he had kept this routine; all he knew was that the moon was high, the stars were out, and the hares had given up hours ago in urging him to get some sleep when they went to bed themselves.
Just then, the door crashed open and Lepus burst through. The hare wasted no time in getting to the point.
"Our squirrel friend is missing! Went to look for the filthy vermin, sah, but hasn't returned yet--intended to be back by nightfall."
Acheron turned and hurried over. "When? Where did he go missing--where did you see him last?" Did you find out anything about Lillith that we don't already know? The last may have been the most important to Acheron, but of the least importance at the moment, so he left it unspoken.

Nobeast among the Redwallers knew what became of Abbot Tsanom. He had suddenly disappeared one night. There had been a gathering of Redwallers the next night. Being enslaved by the vermin that infested their Abbey, the Redwallers could find little time to have such a gathering. A young mouse voiced the thoughts of everybeast present. "D'you think the vermin have something to do with it?" "Of course they do," replied Gorinan, the former Cellarhog. "They know how important our Abbot is to us. No doubt they've taken him and are planning something." The mouse spoke up again. "But why? They've already taken the Abbey, and they couldn't possibly have any more control over us than they do now. What use would he be to them?" "Look around you, Dade," Gorinan argued. "Look at what the disappearance of our abbot has caused among us. Beasts are worried, disorganized, and confused. I don't know what they're planning, but why else would Tsanom disappear?"
"Maybe he's escaped," Dade suggested. This caused an uproar among the Redwallers. The idea that anybeast could escape the Abbey was ridiculous. On the other paw, there were rumors that three beasts had escaped the day of the attack. The black-furred squirrel, Gale, the healer-fox Catava, and a mouse named Rakshun. There was also the rumor that another had escaped, though the story had changed in each telling, as had the name of the creature. _____________________________________________________________ Three creatures sat 'round a large table, a stoat, a vixen, and a lizard. All three held great power over individual armies. They were in Cavern Hole, once the meeting place of Redwallers; now the room of the Council of Warlords. All three fell silent as a dark figure entered the room. The dark apparition halted before the table. Nobeast knew what type of creature it was. Some said a wildcat, some thought it a wolf, and others believed it to be a monster. Whatever the case, the creature was terrifying. Also a mystery was its name. Never had it revealed its identity in any way. Vermin had decided to name it after the long-dead snake legend, Asmodeus.
"It is time now, to expand. The place of red walls is securely under my control."
The three vermin knew exactly what they were to do. Adirolf, the stoat spoke up first, "I will move south, build a fortress on the place once called Loamhedge, and conquer the Painted Ones."
Teresta, the lizard spoke next. "I am to conquer the mountain of the fire lizard--Salamandastron."
Annozira spoke last, "I shall return home to the Gorge of Foxes, complete the fortress being built there, continue to the North, and claim Marshank."
"Well done," Asmodeus said. Originally, there were five Great Warlords, until a ferret forgot his part in the scheme.
