Creation & EvolutionForum for the discussion of this important topic. This forum is open to non-believers. There is a Christians-only forum in the Christians-only section too.
I suggest you read The Creationists by Ronald Numbers for a history of the movement which started in America and has continued to be mostly American though Answers in Genesis did start in Australia and Creationism is fairly strong there. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...66563?v=glance
We have a lot of religious fundamentalists here in the US, especially in the so called Bible belt.
I find it strange creationism thrives like that in a modern country like the US.
I'm pretty sure I've never met a creationist in my life, and looking at the amount of internetpages supporting creationism, I'd say 50% of the american population needs psyciatric help.
Doesnt it make you nerveous living in a country where a fundamental christian could gain democratic power to nuke the entire planet, just to make sure Revelation came true in his lifetime?
It sounds like your getting creationists mixed up with televangelists.
My theory is that baldness is a result of being arrogant.
You know like a roaster when he struts around and really thinks he is something.

Don't be overly dramatic. We also have a very strong tradition of limited, secular government.
Actually, I'm far more worried about religous or ideological fundementalists in Pakistan and Korea than I'd ever be worried about your scenario.

Hmmm...how convenient! Three birds with one stone:
1) Religious people are morons
2) Creationists are morons
3) Americans are morons
In any truly free country, there are bound to be a significant representation of any group imaginable - even idiotic groups (that's the point of freedom). In any group, there are bound to be idiots (e.g. even among U.S. soldiers *gasp*). In any religious group, there are bound to be idiots - but maybe not the kind of religious idiots there are in other countries. The more of any group there are, the higher the number of idiots. It's simple math.
As to why this particular type of idiocy (young earth creationism), I have a theory. Christianity has thrived and grown into a million permutations, all of which are represented in the U.S. Due to the large number of Christians present throughout the history of the U.S., secular voices have not been able to drown the voices of Christians, but they have caused a countermeasure: conservative evangelicalism and fundamentalism. Because there is nothing violent about this persuasion, our country has tolerated and indeed become the bastion of this movement.
The idea that any Christian (especially the conservative ones) would try to bring about the evils and tribulations of Revelation only comes from the imaginations of TV and movie writers. It's really preposterous and a remarkably unconvincing strawman.
