Check out Zahns books, The New Jedi Order and The Legacy of The Force books, some however like the Black Fleet trilogy or children of the jedi are dross.

In the first book, Lumiya talks about how the Sith are not always evil and that they serve a purpose for the greater good. Had they expanded on that instead of reverting back to good vs. evil in such a black and white fashion, it would have reaffirmed my love for all things Star Wars. As it stands, it is pretty much a pile of Bantha poo doo with a few bright spots.

I read the space odyssey series and loved all four of those books.
I'm in the process of reading the Rama series. Four books in that one and I'm halfway through the third book. The first one, Rendezvous with Rama, is probably my favorite book. Amazing!

Depends on the author, I was disapointed by the ending, the focus became to tight on just 1 or 2 charctors and the whole galatic civil war thing falls way into the background, not willing to say more, spoilers. I liked the early books where you did never knew who was right or wrong and it was all shades of gray.

True. The different authors kind of throw me for a loop, as well. Han and Leia are completely different depending on the author. One of them has them being movers and shakers, another has them wise and even somewhat aloof, and the third has them bantering and having the time of their lives. I still have the final book to read, but I'm not sure I really care enough to go get it. I suppose I'm pot committed and I have to finish the series, but it just doesn't seem high on my list right now.

really great books!
you know... Those three books were the first English books I read (apart from the schoolbooks of course). It was a good start. Great challenge for me at the time. Helped me learn English faster for sure

His books (and he was a prolific author, especially in the 60's and early 70's) are very philosophical in nature. His favourite subject was the nature of reality and our perception of it. He also wrote extensively about (in that many of his characters lived in) repressive governments. Sadly, PKD (as his fans call him) was a bit of a nutter and his later works (1974 onwards) take on a pseudo-religious theme.
If you're interested in reading some of his books I would check out;
The Man In The High Castle (he won a Hugo award for this)
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
A Scanner Darkly
Martian Time-Slip
Time Out of Joint (my personal favourite although it's one of his lesser known works)
Ubik
Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said
We Can Build You
Clans Of the Alphane Moon
VALIS (read this only if you're interested in his wacky religious views). |

Authors: Le Guin and Cherryh
Both worht a risk as they are prolific. If you like them you find a lot to read.
Oh also Zimmer Bradley.
"The Cold Equations" in a way the most hated of SF stories, at least the one people have tried to 'rewrite' to change the ending.
"I Remember Babylon " (sp)
Flowers for Algernon.
For that matter look up Hugo and Nebula winners.
The collections 'Soviet Science Fiction" and "More Soviet Science Fiction" by Asimov. I'm rather partial to the story "Three Matches".
Anyone know of anything recent that measures up to this list? |
