IMO
Well there is a difference between Literal & literalist. It is difficult to be Literalist when the expresions & language have changed.

When someone says its freezing outside. Today we know it may mean its just cold. Decades from now a Literalist would say it was 32 degrees.

Yet I do feel you have believe the Bible is True in its teaching & understand the importance of the message in its context. Sometime the exact number may not be of importance but gives you a better idea of the magnitude vs there were allot of them?

Just my take

I agree the Bible is not a Science book, Things may not always add up with todays speculations & calculations. It still does not prove the Bible to in error.

I find it Ironic when a evolutionist says it is crazy that we all came from 1 man & 1 woman. Yet I have been told DNA can be traced back to one pair. Yet it is Okay to believe we all came from slim which formed into a Frog on & on?

Far as the Earth being a Billion years old it would make sense to be older than the Sun cause according to calculations a which rate the Sun burns. A Billion years ago the Sun would be so big it would have fried the earth. That is only using scientific calculations, I am not restricting what God did by what only makes sense on paper. On paper a Bumble bee cannot fly? On paper the Ark would float, yet I don't really care. If the Bible says Noah built an Ark then In My book he built an Ark. lol

I've wondered about Adam and Eve, too. We don't ever refer to them as Saints, do we?

i have seen icons of them in which they DO have halos. Fr. Seraphim Rose addresses this in his book Genesis, Creation, and Early Man -- they are indeed Saints, as evidenced by our Pascha icons which shows Christ drawing them from the tombs with him. If I recall correctly there is a day for them on teh calendar (dont hold me to that). but i do know that St. Ireneaus says it is heresy to believe that Adam was not saved.

Some interesting facts from genetic research

Genetic research has shown that all men go back to one common male ancestor and all women go back to one common female ancestor.

Interestingly, the common ancestor for women is significantly further back than the common ancestor for men.

This means that at some point in the past there was one male and his offspring, which had wives from separate bloodlines, and all men and women today are descended from that one man and his family.

This fits perfectly of course with the story of Noah and the flood in which Noah was the only male surviving blood line (all his sons would have been from his bloodline obviously) but Noahs wife and the wives of his sons were all from different blood lines.

Further evidence supports the idea that there was a near extinction event in the recent past where humanity's gene pool was reduced to almost nothing (ie humans almost became extinct).

Really? I was told wrong then.

But that makes sense.
