((You didn't say she was frightened even inwardly, so...))

How long? How long what? "In New York?" Her muddied brow crinkled as she tried to remember. "Four years, I think. On the Jersey side." Wylie's throat ached from speaking, so she turned back to the cougar. Carefully, she wrapped her hands around the two back paws and started to pull. Slowly, the cat's body began to drag through the dirt. If she could just get it through the Park and a few more blocks away, then things would be safe.

((I'm tired and not thinking clearly so... yeah, she was scared, but I just forgot to say it))

Sierra just stood there frozen for a few moments. Four years...but how did she survive when my siblings didn't? Old bitterness rose up in her and she savored the feel of it for a few moments before pushing it back down. There'll be time to wallow in self-pity later. she thought as she finally took a step forward. "I'll...I'll help you." she offered to Wylie.

Wylie accepted the help without a word and together they dragged the corpse through the tall Park grass, over the hill, across the road and down a back alley. "Far enough." Wylie finally said. "This is far enough. Then, carefully following their same path back, she sprinkled bleach over the ground to blot out any smell of blood. "The Park holds my garden," she explained simply. "I can't let... I can't let it be found." When they reached the garden again, Wylie looked around, at a loss for words. "Would you like some lunch?" Somewhere, vaguely she remembered offering that to someone before, sometime before Then when everything was labeled "normal". It seemed odd to be doing the same thing again when everything was very "not normal".

Sierra was silent for a few moments and then said, "Only if you can spare it. If not...then that's alright." She swallowed against a suddenly dry throat and then said, "I have some canned food stockpiled at..." She stopped yet again, not able to force herself to say the word 'home.' Shaking off the feeling of despair that threatened to take hold, Sierra swallowed again and asked, "Where do you stay?"

Wylie shook her head. "I have enough. Come." Don't leave me. Don't leave me like the Others did. Like the whole world has. But before leading Sierra onward, she carefully picked up her yoke, refilled the buckets, and watered her plants. She imagined she could count each drop soaking into the soil, each capsule of liquid a promise of life and food for tomorrow, a chance to last the winter that would arrive soon enough. Once finished, she wiped her hands on her skirt, replaced the yoke inside the tree, and started south.

Just across the road rose the City in all its decaying glory. Rats scampered in the street, reveling in their freedom as savage dogs barked blocks away. A sign by the nearest building proclaimed in faded letters "The Artur Groveton Museum". This was home for now.

While Wylie was busy watering her plants, Sierra went over to where her bike was laying and pulled it up and quickly inspected it. It didn't seem to be damaged in any way and she stood up and looped the helmet strap over one of the handlebars just as Wylie replaced the yoke in the tree. Pushing her bike, she followed Wylie out of the park and toward a nearby museum. "This where you stay?" Sierra asked, motioning toward the museum.

"For a little while now," Wylie replied. "Brick walls, nor'easter shutters." Necessities for subjects she didn't want to mention. She walked straight for a small back door, probably where the employees would sneak out for a smoke break, stepping over broken bottles and cigarette butts and other signs that people had once been here. "My lodging here, my food out back. It's handy." The more she talked the easier it seemed to be, but the noise emanating from her own mouth sent chills up her arms. Dangerous, even during the day. With a mighty tug, she pulled open the door. "In here."

Sierra nodded and followed Wylie toward the museum. "My bike...can I bring it inside?" she asked, not wanting to leave it outside. She wished she had brought her pack with her, but she didn't expect to be out for as long as she was.

Liesel nodded. "Yeah. Haven't been outside much....y'know, Wal-Mart's kind of my own little fortress out here...." She laughed, partly to ease the tension she felt.

Liesel grinned back, walking toward the Toys section at the back of the store. "It's safer back here....They've never come back here, anyway." She was halfway there before she realized that Ryan might not have come here for the heck of it, and she stopped and whirled around. "What'd you come here for, anyway?"

“This will do nicely,” Chassy said, looking up at a three-story brick building. The grass around it was long and shaggy, and bugs whizzed about the tips of the blades. Wrinkling her nose, she waded through the yard and tried the door. It was locked; no surprise there. A half-smile crossed her mouth. Locks had ceased to stop her a long time ago.

A few minutes later she was inside, with minimal damage to the door. She pulled out her gun—just to be safe—and wandered around inside, checking out the layout of the place.
“I think I could like this place,” she said, her voice soft. There was a vague scent of mildew arising from the floor, but she could ignore that. “And if I can’t, I can just find another place.”

She wasn’t sure how long she’d been inside, but when she was on the second floor, her new suite all picked out and loaded with locks (whoever lived here before must have been quite the cautious sort, she thought wryly—then quickly pushed aside the notion before the irony of it could hit), a flicker of movement out the window caught her attention. Her body jerked straight, her hand going to her gun, and she sucked in a deep gulp of air. Black wings fluttered, and her shoulders slumped with the escape of her breath.

“Just a bird,” she whispered. “ ‘A stately raven of the saintly days of yore.’ ” She frowned, the parallelism of the quote striking a nerve she didn’t want to be struck. “No more Poe for you, Chassy, I think.” Her voice trembled a little, belying the humor she tried to insert. “ ‘Saintly days of yore’ indeed. What exactly is that supposed to mean, anyway?” She couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling that the bird’s appearance had jarred in her, though, and she checked the window to make sure it was locked and secured—then for good measure started pushing over the dresser.

When it was in place, only a sliver of the window could be seen. The only way one of the Creatures could see in was if They were climbing on the wall above—not necessarily an impossibility, but an improbability, yes. Or so she told herself, curling up on the full size bed. She refused to think about when the last time someone slept on it was—nor what might have happened to that person—and instead pulled out her supper and her notebook, Journ. Time for another night’s regime. She blinked a few times, staring out at the wedge of reddish sky. “Another night of being by myself…”

After a silence, she added, “Better than being in the company of Them.” Somehow, the thought didn’t cheer her.
