Was Dean Evans still there when you went....He was great and saved me from many a scrape, as the others didnt like my attitude too much... I was asked why I consistently missed evening worship and came up with a classic 'yogi'... "Sometimes I make it and other times I dont"....that kept me in the doghouse for awhile...

I was there 89-92. The only Evans I remember was the gymnastics coach (yes, I'm a former Gym-mater).
I was put on CP a couple of times for missing worship. As a punishment I had to give worships (SUCH a punishment for a pastor!).

Well they couldnt figure out my 'yogism' so I didnt get suspended, but when they caught me with that car I snuck up from Miami and I was a freshman......Ouch...
Lets just say, I spent the rest of my 'tenure' at Southern with a 'Resident Assistant' 3 steps behind me.......

I remember them checking our rooms to make sure we had gone to church! (22 years old!) And when they figured out that we left to play tackle football they made sure we were dressed in 'church clothes' before leaving. That's when we dressed up and then went to our cars to change and THEN go play tackle football.
It completely reminded me of being in boarding academy! We were adults! Yet they treated us like high-schoolers. (I'm over it now! BTW.)

Was Jaecks part of Gym-masters when you were there? I can't seem to remember when he took over for Evans. He really took Gym-masters to another level. They don't seem like they have recovered yet from him quitting back in, lets see.... 98? man that has been a long time ago!
Hey I bet you know Burney Culpepper...? If so, any good stories you got on him?

From my perspective, the stricter rules were/are a good thing... I went to Andrews from Southern and noticed the EXTREME difference in the overall spiritual atomsphere. (Andrews was MUCH more lax) Yes you can find what you want, but looking back now I would much rather my kids be "required" to go to worships and be out of the dorm on Sabbath morning than be in a dorm where you can't sleep from cigarette smoke and most door props are beer bottles. I also believe it taught a little about responsiblity, you aren't where you are supposed to be you are in trouble.
Granted, there is a difference btw 22 and 18 y/o freshman. Most of those 18 y/o came from academies where they were under the same rules and probably would not know how to handle themselves, as it is they have a lot more freedom.

Red, what years were you there? Seems I don't recall a rule saying freshmen couldn't have vehicles? I wasn't there as a freshmen so I just may have not noticed it enough to remember it.
We should treat college students as adults. Treating them like kids only encourages irresponsible behavior until they are in their late 20s (instead of late teens).
We would do well to encourage responsibility and independence in our highschool students (talking about US as a whole).
People don't become adults until you allow them to make decisions (and be responsible for those decisions) themselves. Coddling them and treating them as children does them no favors.
