Reps: 26,771 (power: 43) | | | what fascinates me about our sun Our sun contains over 99% of the mass contained in the entire universe. That to me is incredible. Why our sun? Why not some other star? Our sun can hold over one million of our Earths. How is it that our star, while being so big, releases EXACTLY the right amount of energy to sustain life on our planet? Over 380 billion trillion kilowatts, the equivalent to 100 billion tons of TNT exploding each second.
Coincidence? Come on. Not even the most close-minded scientist can genuinely buy into that argument. It's there for a reason, and it's presence isn't random.

Reps: 154 (power: 0) | | | wouldn't it be better to ask why our planet is situated perfectly to catch that energy?
that means that nowhere else a planet is closer to a weaker sun, allowing for the same amount of energy?

You're a puddle.
"Why look, this hole fits me perfectly, it must have been made just for me!"

And your coherent counter-position would be?

The puddle is made to fit the hole, not the other way around. So life has evolved to survive in the conditions already here.
Anyway, our sun is only 1 of billions of suns in billions of solar systems in billions of galaxies, so obviously one must be able to allow life to being and sustain it.

Umm...***?! No it doesn't. Nowhere near. It's an insignificant fraction of the whole. How is it that our star, while being so big, releases EXACTLY the right amount of energy to sustain life on our planet?
There is no 'exactly the right amount'. Many stars, perhaps even most have an inhabitable region somewhere around them. The trick is to be in it. |

Yeah. And why are sharks over 200 feet long with huge, poison-tipped claws and the ability to shoot lasers out of their eyeballs? That to me is incredible. Why sharks?
In case you didn't notice, my description of a shark and your description of the sun are both completely and entirely false.

Afraid it does. From NASA: http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2...tm?list1045353 To begin to understand the perfect space storm you must first begin to understand the gargantuan numbers with which plasma physicists like Tsurutani work every day. At over 1.4 million kilometers (869,919 miles) wide, the Sun contains 99.86 percent of the mass of the entire solar system: well over a million Earths could fit inside its bulk. The total energy radiated by the Sun averages 383 billion trillion kilowatts, the equivalent of the energy generated by 100 billion tons of TNT exploding each and every second.

I think I should actually read someones posts properly from now on rather than just skim them, otherwise i would have read " Our sun contains over 99% of the mass contained in the entire universe. That to me is incredible. Why our sun?" and be shocked that someone actually believes this.
