I actually have the mirena IUD and I really like it a lot, (I know you mentioned before that you don't like hormones though and it does contain a small amount of progestrin, the copper IUD [paraguard] does not contain any hormones though.). Maybe you've looked into/considered it before, but if you haven't you're technically the "ideal candidate" for one I know everyone is different, but for the most part I have been nothing but pleased with my IUD.
A friend of ours has one and will be having surgury in the next two weeks to have it taken out. Yes, surgury. It shifted on her and is now making her very ill.

My husband had a vas. 3 years ago. He had no complications except for like HeyHomie said some sharp pain every once in a rare while at the incision sight that is gone in a blink.

As with anything involving knives and your body, really research the doctor.

DH had a vas 3 years ago after our last child was born. She was unplanned, unexpected and we both nearly died before she was born. DH and I decided that we had to insure that we would not have any further life threatening childbirths and so he got clipped.
Insurance paid for the whole thing, he got done on a Thursday, drove himself there and back and sat on the couch watching movies all weekend. Back to work on Monday and we no longer fear unplanned pregnancies.

It was easy, safe and permanent, we both highly reccomend it!

You're the ideal candidate because you've had babies and don't want hormones but want reliable contraception.

It's not for everyone. I have a copper IUD and it was not bad at all (this is my second... I had the other between kiddo 1 and 2 - the 2nd I had on purpose and had the IUD removed after 5 or so years of use).

Having it inserted the first time is scarey, but it's not any worse than a pap smear honestly. I did get a little woozy (not sure why because it wasn't about the pain) and orange juice fixed that. The second time was no problem at all because I knew what to expect. I do think it increases your menstural pain a little (not bad) and discharge (not great if you have alot already) but it's worth it to me because I am not able to do anything else (other than sterilization).

If you're going for surgical sterilization vasectomy is probably the best option. Tubals involve the abdominal cavity and sedation which are both much more dangerous than the local injection for vasectomy and the fact that it is not an intraabdominal procedure. The complications are here: http://www.vasectomy-information.com/moreinfo/risks.htm

There's something new on the market as well. There are these little cork screw things they can put in your tubes with a scope that scar them up and keep the egg from traveling to the uterus at all... no fertilization can occur so this shouldn't be a problem for people who are worried about "pseudo abortions" like with the IUD. Problem is this is NOT reversible, unlike a tubal which has a chance of reversal.... like vasectomy does.

Best of luck.

It looks like alot of those women used the hormonal IUD which I would also not recommend (for the same reasons I would not recommend the shot or implant of hormones).

Just to reiterate, I had no problem getting pregnant after my copper IUD (and got it out in early March and was pregnant by the end of April... so I don't think it inhibited my fertility at all).

Husband had a vascectomy 2 yrs ago.. so far so good. he is very, ummm.. active and tried to be active the same day. Not a good idea. After a week we resumed relations. I don't know if this is typical, but he healed very quickly and we have not regretted the decision. Tubal would have been more costly and healing would have take longer. Melissa

My husband had his vasectomy more than 20 years ago, and even then he wasn't in much discomfort. The risk of complications is very small. Don't read the anecdotal horror stories and think they are typical. It's really a pretty easy procedure with a quick recovery time.

My FIL had one back in 1979-1980 and as far as I know he's been fine. However, I only know what my hubby has told me and prefer not to discuss such things with him (my FIL). :shudder:

My FIL had one too, and he's fine, accept after his vasectomy they conceived my youngest BIL. The reason for this being, of heard, they had sex on the earliest possible day they could after, and probably the other reason is, I've heard you're supposed to ejaculate before having sex (i.e. masturbate) and get rid of any excess um.. fertile stuff before having sex after a vasectomy, and :shudder: I hate talking about this stuff about my FIL too, but he talks about it all the time (not the latter part but the former about how my BIL was conceived after a vasectomy so).
Anyway, I have heard something about certain research showing that a vasectomy may not be as safe as we think, but other research shows that it basically is. Like with any BC, I'd say do your research
(and when doing research about birth control it's generally best to avoid any sources put out my pharmaceutical companies [though with vasectomies this may not be an issue, because a vasectomy isn't produced by a pharmaceutical company] and religious organizations.) and make the decision that works best for you and your family.
There is no perfect birth control. I can't tell you how many people have asked me "Isn't there any natural birth control that I can take?" (by natural they don't mean NFP, they mean an herb or vitamin).
No there's not really (there is actually a tea you can brew that is an effective contraceptive, but I would not recommend this, because you have to take it just so, brewed correctly at the same time in the same part of your cycle. and if you are pregnant and take it it can cause a miscarriage).
For most people there is no perfect contraceptive, but most people should be able to find one they can live with with little or no side effects for them.
Me personally, I really love my contraception choice, but even if I didn't, for me the bloating I have with the tri-phasic pill is still better than getting pregnant. The mood swings I get with the mono-phasic pill are better than getting pregnant.
I know a TON of women right now who stopped taking the pill for some reason or other (usually spotting or moodswings) and did not even try another form of BC or even another type of pill (which could have fixed the problem). These are women who did NOT want to and could NOT afford to get pregnant, and it just makes ME wonder "Is being pregnant and raising a child for 20+ years really easier than dealing with spotting or bloating or whatever?"
Now I've gone on a tangent, and I was talking about vasectomies...

I was 35 when my 2nd daughter was born and since she had to be delivered c-section, I opted to have my tubes tied then. I haven't had any problems at all, but did you mean procedural or post procedural problems?
