If should be noted that staff still have some level of discretion, and infractions may not be automatic, especially in the case of new members, or possibly for the first violation.
The above is not considered a rule change, but more so a clarification of the existing rules, specifically in the case of words which are not censored, and how violations will be handled.
mnphysicist, would you care to comment on some of the discussion already in progress on the Wiki Rules Discussion called "Cussing and Filth"?
I am not particularly into swearing - in fact, I don't. I am an Atlantic Canadian. Some of the words US Americans use in these forums and apparently think are everyday language are considered rude and offensive where I live. Some of the words people here use matter of factly, including on the church steps, US Americans seem to consider 'bad words'. Australian and British members are making the same complaint.
Word 3 on your banned list has usages pertaining to shipping and boat building in my area (a historic association). Word 4 is preferred usage over other indelicate terms in several areas of the world, including where I live. The word not censored on this board for defecation is considered rude and aggressive where I live, while the word that is censored here is considered a mild imprecation that one's mother might say in a hammer-on-thumb situation.
This is so very US-centric and, IMO, petty, I find it difficult not to be really annoyed, especially as you are penalizing people with infractions for using them. Please state right out that these forums are not intended to be global in nature, but are purely designed to avoid offending a particular class of US citizens. Then the rest of us global hoi-polloi will at least know we're standing on US territory and all that that entails. And spare me the 'staff level of discretion'. which means nothing if staff have no clue how language is used elsewhere on the planet, except that perfectly innocent people will be embarassed with reports and PMs and endless explanations of themselves.
And before some poor soul gets reported for a 'misspelled swearword': the term Tinker's Dam derives from a small bit of metal tinkers used to block the spout (hence, a dam) of their melting pot while repairing pots and pans. After, they would throw the bit of metal away, as it was no use to them, thus, "I don't give a Tinkers' Dam..." means 'even something of very little or no worth'. I have used this term to describe aspects of leading stained glass. I make church and residential stained glass windows.
There will be endless examples of this, unless CF plans to provide a dictionary of 'disallowed foriegn English terms'.
I worked for some years in the building industry here. We used to use 'Bastard' files, that is their proper name. Bastard Swords exist and as I used to be a member of the SCA, I occasionally lapse into correct usage.
We really do need to be careful about limiting the language people use. Especially when we are talking about cross-cultural communication where a word which is acceptable in my culture might not be acceptable in the US. Should the US essentially dictate the use of my native language?

This is ridiculous imo - if you wouldnt stand up in your church and say those things in contexts other than biblical and wouldnt say them openly to a crowd in a favorite resturant or store then obviously they shouldnt be said in this public place either.
Well, I guess that's the inherent problem then. I would have no problem saying those words in front of people at my church (not in church because I don't speak during church, I am there to pray and worship) or in a store or at a restaurant. They are not offensive words so there is no reason not to use them in those contexts, and I do not believe in "putting on a church face" and acting differently in front of people at my church than I would act with a group of my most intimate friends.
Good grief, we're not talking about throwing F-bombs or using words that won't get past the censors on network television at 8:00 p.m. The words being discussed here are just as mild and inoffensive as "darn", "heck", and "butt".
Making those words subject to immediate staff edits AND infractions, as opposed to staff edits OR infractions, is my biggest issue - beside the whole "I'm not 4 years old please don't treat me as such" thing.

question kiwi - you are complaining about what the majority of the board sees as a problem and that no one has the "right" to dictate as rules whats allowable by "american culture " but then give examples of your culture and want everyone to cater to it- how is that line of reasoning any different?

AngelforTruth, bastard files are called bastard files pretty much everywhere English is spoken, including the US. It is the proper name for thetool, not a slang term.
Edit to add: from Dictionary.com, Webster's definition
Bastard file
File \File\, n. [AS. fe['o]l; akin to D. viji, OHG. f[=i]la, f[=i]hala, G. feile, Sw. fil, Dan. fiil, cf. Icel. ??l, Russ. pila, and Skr. pi? to cut out, adorn; perh. akin to E. paint.] 1. A steel instrument, having cutting ridges or teeth, made by indentation with a chisel, used for abrading or smoothing other substances, as metals, wood, etc.
Note: A file differs from a rasp in having the furrows made by straight cuts of a chisel, either single or crossed, while the rasp has coarse, single teeth, raised by the pyramidal end of a triangular punch.

Bombila i can honestly state after being part of many offices that ive never heard of the term before. Can you tell me how it would apply to this message board exactly also?

Isaiah 8:12-13 (NIV) "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread."
I thought I'd chime in. It says automatic infraction, but with staff discression. So, this Ministry team is taking a couple takes on this:
If the word is used in proper sense, it's fine. If you're talking about eternal damnation, no error.
Also, we are going to give every a warning for their first offense, so it's not an automatic infraction. After this first warning it will result in an infraction. In this first warning though we will let the member know this.
One thing that should be set about swearing here is that it's in text. Since you type out the swear words it is a very dilerberate proccess, it's not like accidently swearing in person. It is text, so we should think about what we say before we say it.
