Numbers 22
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me.”
20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the way as an adversary against him.

It looks like Balaam followed what God told him to do. Or didn't he? Why was God's anger aroused when Balaam went, when Balaam was already given permission to go?

The wonders of having a pastor for a best friend, is you can call & ask these questions :
In verse 20 God told Balaam - "If the men come to call you, rise & go with them...", but instead the next morning Balaam rose & went to them instead of waiting.
It may seem to be semantics, but if they had called on him & asked him to come, then their invitation would have conveyed a certain level of authority to Balaam which would have given God an open door. Historically, if you invited someone to come into your home or to go with you, you conveyed a level of honor, hospitality, and authority for them to work in your life. By not waiting for the invitation, he was not granted that authority and therefore was unable to accomplish God's plan. By joining to them without an invitation, he was no longer an honored guest, but instead in service to them.

Because Balaam did not tell the princes that the people of Israel were blessed.
God told him do not go with them, that he must not curse them because they are blessed.
Baalam said to the princes: "Go back to your own country, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you."
and later they asked him again, and he replied:
"Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the LORD my God. Now stay here tonight as the others did, and I will find out what else the LORD will tell me."
He already knew what the LORD said and still he did not tell them that the people of Israel were blessed.

One of the things I think many do not think about in this is that what stood in his way was an angel of the Lord. Many times we call angels to help us but of prime importance is our obedience because as witnessed here an angel of the Lord only does the Word of the Lord and can be an ally fighting for us us or an enemy fighting against us.

and he actually did, but g-d said that love altered his decision and did not hear what was said by the prophet, because he loves the children of Abraham.
