I've always understood it as a term for a harness/suit of armor with many plates composing it, rather than just one breast plate, or something like that. I dunno, you might no better than I.

Technically, it is called plate armor, or chainmail. Often Knights would wear chainmail under their plate armor.
I know its called plate armor or chainmail in most cases. I've just heard it called platemail in a few cases of a whole suit, like the one my character wears. But yes, I used it incorrectly. I checked a better source and it only calls it plate mail when its something similar to splint mail, with lots of small plates riveted into a vest or larger armor.

No, that would be plate armour, or (if consisting of really many small overlapping parts) segmented plate armour. Full plate armour if it's the whole deal.
mail = chainmail. The "chain" part is a neologism invented by historians centuries after the thing had become obsolete.
"mail" is not a generic word for armour, unlike what some authors of roleplaying games have concluded and started to refer to plate armour as "platemail". Thing is, most RPG authors don't know much about real medieval combat, but rather prefer to imitate others, so the oxymoron has stuck.

I are serious RPGer. This is serious thread.
Do I sence a fellow history geek? What RPG's do you play?
