Sylvanna shrieked as a bullet tore through her side and momentarily overcome by pain she lost altitude. As she watched the carnage below, horror at the bloodshed warred with her survival instinct.
She watched as Alaric dropped, a bullet piercing his shoulder. Fearing for her only commanion she dropped even lower down, which unfortunately put her within reach as Alaric unleashed his power on her. One shadow spike ripped through her right shoulder and tore a chunk out of one wing.
Pain and exhaustion began to take their toll on her as her vision briefly clouded over. Struggling against obilivion Sylvanna thought, 'So that was what he was hiding from me!'.
She was vaguely aware of Alaric fleeing and calling out to her but wasn't able to distinguish what exactly he was saying, though the emotion in his voice did register.
Realizing that staying here was a very bad idea she gathered the last of her rapidly fading strength and flew as fast as she could after Alaric, hoping to catchup.
Alaric sped down the abandoned roadways. The dark and sinister tentacles encircled light poles, edges of buildings, and anything else they could get a grip on.
He felt deep remorse, bordering on horror. He had attacked his only companion, what if she was killed? What if she lived only to hunt him down? He was a monster.
Using his abilities, eyes formed in the shadows behind him. He could see Sylvanna tailing him. He was unsure of her intent, however. A quiet voice gently pushed into his mind. He easily identified the voice, but it was so convincing... Come now, the delusion of friends is absurd. You cannot fight your instincts. Kill her, before she kills you!
Alaric felt his control wearing thin. He knew before long his other half would retake his body. And if that happened, he might kill her for real.
In his deep mental uneasiness, he did not realize until it was too late that he gripped a rusty pole. It collapsed, sending him to the ground.
The tentacles retracted back into his body. Every shadow in the small plaza stretched to touch him. He looked up through his crimson eyes, watching his potential friend/killer approach.
He ached to attack her, but anguished at the thought of harming her. A monster like you does not deserve a friend. You tried to kill her. And you know you enjoyed it...
NO! You enjoyed it, not me! I am not you. You are not who I am. I could never harm anyone like you could...
Look at how pathetic you are. I AM YOU. I am your true nature, and it scares you because you know its true. You relished crushing the vitals out of those poor policemen. You were the one that found such enjoyment in the performance. I merely set the stage. You are an abomination. Think about how she feels. You tried to kill her. You may as well now, you surely crushed any hopes of friendship. Do you seriously think she would track you to forgive?
"No...you're...wrong. I am not.... I couldn't... I couldn't put her through what I feel. I can't allow her to live this wretched existence. I will be her friend by saving her from this world...
Alaric stood to his feet, shadows shattering and swarming like insects, swallowing his body. An exoskeleton covered every inch of him. His arms became massive pincers. His mouth an awful maw.
Tears in his eyes, underneath all the darkness, he raised his deformed arm, and a sharp spine emerged from the center of the claw. It writhed towards his opponent with an unshakeable sense of regret.
Unknown to him however, a camera perched above a decrepit shop caught every second on film. The was now video proof being downloaded into police databases. Not to mention the two cops who survived his onslaught.

Kristi nodded. She wasn't fond of flying with someone else in control, but it was the only way. She shoved the documents into her duffle and grabbed onto Kane, praying that she wouldn't fall.

Taking a deep breath she took hold of Kristi's forearms for better grip and began to beat her wings to gain momentum, though they weren't quite taking off yet. "OK, now I need to run over somethings. I've never done this before, but logically if you start to scream your head off I most likely will drop you....which I think we can both agree is bad. I might also drop you if you start to wiggle or if you don't hold onto me as tightly as I hold onto you."
Her wings began to beat harder and their feet felt less burdened with weight, "I also would like to add that if I drop you for any other reason, I am very sorry..." Smiling innocently, they began to raise up into the air and as Kane became horizonal for flight, Kristi dangled from Kane's arms, "Now hold on...I move pretty fast..."
Taking another deep breath, she turned them into the opposite direction of home and shot off into the air at an incrediable speed. It was so fast that the air pushed Kristi almost into Kane. After gaining quite a bit of altitude, she paused and looked down. As far as the eye could see were buildings, and dots for cars, and smaller dots for people, and swimming pools, and satellite dishes, and so many tiny little things that had once been so large and strong. "Isn't it amazing?"

Sylvanna was still consious and flying only by sheer force of will when she saw the shadow spine Alaric launched in her direction. Acting on instinct alone she did the first thing that came into her head, folding her wings and diving rapidly towards the ground causing the attack to miss. She pulled up barely in time to avoid crashing into the hard unforgiving ground, wrenching her wings in the process and eliciting a scream of pain.
Slumping to the ground she lay there for a few seconds, whimpering in pain from her injuries, before forcing herself to her feet and limping towards the nearest building hoping to find shelter from her obvilously deranged opponent.
As she limped along she wracked her befogged brain for ideas on how to stop Alaric; not kill him, she didn't want to do that, just stop him from killing her and maybe ,she hoped, knock him back to his senses.
She'd still be some ways behind him when he'd flung that spine at her, though she didn't know how far. Sylvanna hoped she was far enough away that she'd be able to rest a bit before either he found her or she had to go after him again.
'What are the odds that I finally find someone like me and he goes nuts and tries to kill me!?'
Panting, she continued her slow progress towards shelter. 'Just my luck he'd turn out to be some kind of split personality weirdo.'
Reaching her target she dragged herself inside and slumped against one of the inner walls. 'I wish we could have been friends. It would have been nice not to be all alone.'
The events of the day had left her very drained and all her body wanted to do was fall over and sleep for the next decade or two. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible. Not with Alaric and who knows how many policeman still out there looking for her. So taking command of her battle weary body Sylvanna glanced around, looking for anything that might be of use.
Spotting something of interest a few feet away, she crawled over to inspect it. It was so covered in grime that it took a few minutes of wiping it off before she recognized it for what it was, a lighter. A full lighter!!
True she could generate her own fire, but exhausted as she was that would take too much energy. It would be sooo much better to use the small flame produced by the lighter and amplify it as she wished. That would save alot of energy and allow her to put up a bit more of a fight.
Moving as quickly as she could, Sylvanna gathered a pile of burnable debri, stacked it out of the wind and out of sight from the windows, and lit it. Huddling close she began to absorb both the soothing heat and life-sustaining energy produced by the fire.
Like Alaric could recharge using available light sources, so Sylvanna could from already created fires. This was a property of her being able to sustain fire by feeding it energy, simply in reverse.
It wasn't long before the fire burned out, but she'd been able to absorb enough from it to keep her going for a little longer. Knowing she couldn't stay in one place for very long she gathered anything small that would burn, stuffed them into her pockets, and limped out of the building. Staying within whatever cover there was she slowly began moving in the direction she thought he'd been heading. Sylvanna had a small spark of an idea but wasn't terribly sure of it. Still it was better than nothing so she kept moving, hoping that things would work out somehow.

Spotting a bee line of red and blue flashes below, she nodded, though Kane knew Kristi wouldn't see her, "Indeed I shall. Your house looks to be surrounded. I am glad we left when we did. You will not be able to speak with your parents until this is all over."
Floating downward on the wind, she continued to go quite a ways before she finally spotted the rooftop she hated so well. Landing precariously, after having first dropped off Kristi on the roof first, she tucked in her wings and began to feel for the tiles that she had used to camouflage her small swing door which led to her small attic room.
Once finding it, she opened it up and ducked inside first, "I warn you...it's a bit messy....and it might smell...I wasn't exactly expecting company..." This was a completely terrible and poor representation of the situation. All across the wooden floor were carboard boxes filled with trash and garbage, clothes were scattered across the floor, some in a large pile next to the triple locked and padlocked door (all of that on the other side of course) which was obviously due for a laundry pick up sometime soon. In the corner was a small working bathroom, obviously ancient, having been built when the old house had been first constructed and never used since.
Kane's bed and television area was littered with trash and a few books while her main collection of books were stacked nearly to the ceiling in four collapsing piles, each leaning on another or a wall.
Kane herself flopped onto her bed, brushed off a few feathers and garbage and patted the place next to her.

Tyler and Trevor sat alone in their rooms board out of their minds. "So what do you wanna do?"
"I donno, what do you want to do?"

"I'm board."

"Its not really fair. we just wanted to have some fun, and teres nothing wrong with that,"
"Yea, we wont be kids ofr much longer and I'd like to get as much fun in as i can before i have to get all old and boaring."
"i know, how can grandpa expect us to have this awsome ability and just keep it inside. Its unnatural."
"Yea." Trevor said as her doubled inot two.
"We have and idea." Tyler said as he split inot three. "Lets ditch and go have some real fun."
"I suppose we could always just climb out that there window." Trevor siad as he made four more Trevors.
"You're forgetting that we're five stories high." Tyler replied.
"No i'm not. Do you remember when we were little and we used to have that toy with the barrel of monkeys. Well right now i'm looking at a room full of monkeys"
"I see what you're getting at." Tyler sid with smile
So Tyler walked over to the wall and pulled up the small dirt window. Tossed their skate boards to the ground below. then Tyler swung his feet out the window and held on the ledge by his hands. Then Trvor grabbed his hands and started out the window face first, when he got oo far, a Trevor copy graabed his ankled and followed him out the window. This continued util Tyler's feet reached the pavement floor. He then helped trevor down, and all the copies returned. Tyler and Trevor streched and looked back at eachother. " that was totally awsome!" they said at the same time. They hadn't even noticed the little kid in the alley with them, who was staring at them in aw. They tured around to notice him.
"Hey kid! What are you looking at!" Tyler shouted to scare the kid off. And it worked. The kid turned and ran so quickly you would of thought he'd seen a ghost.
The twin picked up their skate boards and skated out of the alley and onto the street.
"I wish everything were as easy as skateboarding."
"i know, life is hard. It easier to just have fun and not worry about stuff."
"Amen to that brother."
So the boys continued down the street with ant cares, that is until Trevor miscalculated The jump from concrete to pavement and slid into the street, scraping his hands and knees.
"Ahhh! " Trevor ans Tyler both said as Trevor got up.
"You gotta be more careful, Trevor. When you screw up you're not the only one who feels it." Tyler said as he sat next to Trevor on the side of the street. Tyler himself wasn't injured as Trevor was, but for a moment he felt his pain.
"Aww, man." Trevor said looking down at the soaked leg of his pants. "Stupid puddle." he siad upset as his own mistake. He had accidentaly slide right into the murkey puddle on the side of the street. He pulled out his leg and started to rubb his knee.
Oeric was wandering randomly around campus looking for something to do. He pulled in random air currents to see if he could hear anything interesting, but was out of luck there. So sighing and mumbling to himself he headed back towards his dorm, thinking that maybe one of his roommates was in and up for a game of something.
Part way there he got distracted by the sound of one of the many fountains on campus, and as usual couldn't resist going over. He'd always loved the sound of water, even before his powers had manifested. Oeric sat down on the fountain rim and stared, smiling, into the clear water.
As it often did the thought of his mutations made him wonder if there was anyone else out there similar to himself. He was by nature a very social guy and he'd really hate it if he was alone.

He'd done this so many times that he wasn't really expecting anything. So he was very surprised when the water clouded over and when it cleared up presented him with an image of twin boys. That got this attention immediately and he tried to extend the image, to see where they were. Unfortunately whatever water source they were sitting by was not large enough to give him a better view.
While Oeric couldn't determine exactly where they were the fact that he could see a scateboard narrowed it down some. Jumping up he dashed full-tilt back to his room, grabbed his car keys, and charged down the stairs to the carport beneath the building. Sliding in he started it up and headed out to find them.
He knew there wasn't much chance of actually finding them but he wasn't going to waste the opertunity, not knowing if there would ever be a another.
Alaric was slowly regaining strength. As his light form absorbed light, this form grew in power the longer it was in darkness. It was a cool force, and a slow assimilation. Light had a lot of energy, so absorption was second nature. The black hunger was like an insatiable maw, slowing becoming stronger in the absence of light.
He of course knew the spine had missed. With his ability, every shadow he controlled was a part of him. Every inch of it was sentient. Again manifesting eyes in the shadows, he saw Sylvanna in the distance. His eyes only operated in near total shade, so she was likely be light of some sort.
He moved his large exoskeleton as his own body, more gliding over the surface of the street rather than walking. He instinctively weaved back and forth away from the few street light posts that actually worked.
He was sorry he didn't kill her quickly, he did not want her to suffer the fear of being hunted.
If only I had killed her quickly. I don't want her to suffer the fear of being hunted. However, I must save her...
