according to how stuff works, evolution cannot explain....

Okay. I just got done reading up on evolution from howstuffworks.com, and they said that one of the holes in the theory of evolution is that it cannot explain how mutations could increase the size of the genome.

Can someone explain this to me?

Sure. The asnwer is:

DONT GET YOUR SCIENCE FROM HOWSTUFFWORKS.com

It's like those abasizers. 5 minutes exercise every second month, and you too can have muscles like Arnie. Science requires work, time, and lots of it.

At any rate, I have no intention of visiting howstuffworks.com, but I have to wonder if their definition of "mutation" included gene duplication, lateral gene transfer or transposable elements.

Have a read up on modern cereal crops, like wheat. Our meddling in their systems has resulted in wholesale duplication of their entire genome. Some of these things are now hexa-ploid (cary 6 copies of their genome). If that aint an increase in size, I don't know what is.

You read it wrong.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/evolution9.htm

They say that a specific mechanism of evolution can't explain it. They then go on to name the mechanisms of evolution that can explain it such as polyploidy and transposons.

Why are you letting things like this bother you?
you have your bible, it gives you all the evidence you need, it has all the answers you will ever need,
be satisfied with that, who cares what other people believe, your God loves you, that's all you need know,
forget the evolutionists, they don't care about your God, they don't even believe your God exists,
all they can do is make you doubt creationism, stay away from them,
remember, what you don't know won't hurt you.

More strawmen.

Accepting evolution is not equal to atheism.

You sure make a lot of logical fallacies.

Your post is basically content free. Notice how when somebody asks a legitimate question, some of us will try to provide a legitimate answer.

You couldn't do that yet you expect others to do that for you?

What value did your response provide to the OP?

Does your response show respect and a valid effort to discuss the topic and question asked?

If not, what the heck is your point and why bother responding at all?

Fear has disabled reputation
Wouldn't insertion and duplication mutations increase the size of the genome? My biology knowledge is fading.

all grains I know of are poliploid and many fruits and veggies have polyploid varieties available.

Okay, so, though notto already answered, I thought I'd give a slightly more detailed answer.

It looks like the article is stating that point mutations cannot explain how evolution can cause strands of DNA to get longer over time. This is pretty obviously true. Instead, the way that DNA strands get longer is through transposons (one chunk of DNA is copied from one area to another, sometimes from a different organism, in the case of bacteria or viruses), or through polyploidy (where cell division causes one daughter cell to have an extra chromosome, a situation which is occasionally neutral or beneficial).

But I also see what is beautiful, what is wonderful. And I feel so deeply appreciative that I am alive. How dare the religious use the term 'born again.' That truly describes freethinkers who've thrown off the shackles of religion so much better!” - Julia Sweeney
