Anyone ever knitted a Poncho?

I have this idea I want to knit a poncho, using big needles and thick yarn.

I have this idea to make 2 triangles, starting with say 3 stitches, then increasing every row (just the one side) until I get a triangle, then sewing the triangles together, with a slit to put the head through.

Just wondering if that will work. I think I'll give it a try, I have nothing to lose.

Has anyone got any links to knitted ponchos?

Also would it be a bit "too much" for a 65 year old woman to wear a poncho? I thought I'd do it in a neutral colour, say navy, or even chocolate brown, I don't know about tassels either.

I'm crocheting a poncho for my grandmother (who is 82) it's gray with silver thread held together in a fishnet stitch. I made two quadrangles (I think that's what they/re called?) I'm going to sew them together on the long sides so it makes kind of a big sqaure with a V-neck hole. Hopefully it will work. I got the idea from another pattern that did that. They just kept increasing the rows. I think your idea might work. There's a lot of poncho patterns online I'm sure you could find some ideas easily.

Ooh your poncho sounds lovely.

I don't crochet but wouldn't mind learning one day.

Ponchos are great for any age. I'm not sure about increasing every row, however. That may broaden your piece prematurely instead of a nice even slope along the edges. I would work mirrored increases, about three stitches from each row beginning and end (IOW, knit or purl 3, make 1 increase, work to within three stitches from the row end and make 1 increase) every three to five rows.

There is a great pattern directory at Knitting Pattern Central. They have a ton of free poncho patterns on this page: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.co...ry/ponchos.php

I am not much of a knitter, but my Mom was. She made me a poncho when I was in elementary school and she did it in one piece on circular needles.

Many poncho patterns in both knit and crochet call for 2 rectangles which are then sewn together.

Thank you. I will look at those later on.

Also I think you are right about the increasing.

Yes I found a pattern in the local library, and this is what it was, 2 rectangles then sewn together. I had a hard time figuring out how they were supposed to be sewn.

I got it in the end and I am so proud of myself.

I did it in Navy blue, but I think that is too dark. I might try a nice teal green one. That should be nice.

I've done the two rectangles - made several in fact for a friend's three daughters. They turned out great.

Show me a man who trusts his own righteousness, obedience, devotion, feelings, or anything else of his own, and I will show you a man to whom the blood and righteousness of Christ is worthless. Don Fortner

It often surprises people to learn that God is not always pleased when people worship him. We might be inclined to think that God should be thankful for any attention we give him out of our busy schedules. But worship is not about God's thanking us; it is about our thanking him. And God is not pleased with just anything we choose to do in his presence. The mighty Lord of heaven and earth demands that our worship-indeed, all of life-be governed by his word.
John M. Frame

The Bible will give Christ to you in an intimacy so close that he would be less visible to you if he stood before your eyes.
Erasmus
