The kind of motorcycle I'm getting:

Except with a little less red:

And add these rims:

With the Neon lights. Except I'm thinking red rather than purple:

Take the MSF class. That R1 is way to much for a new rider,,, you'll kill yourself if you are not 10 x more mature then the average teenager. You really do have a death wish for getting it. Start on something smaller.

Oh yeah! I'm definitely taking all the precaution classes I can get. Doesn't one also have to get a motorcycle license?

No. You can go to the dmv and get your permit as soon as you are of the legal age.

To get your liscence you just have to take a simple drivers test.

I highly recommend the MSF classes. Community colleges in every area have them.

Even with them, you are still playing with your life getting a bike that is that fast.

Oh. I wonder if it's different in other states. I know a guy here who has one, and he had to get a motorcycle license....

here in australia they dont let you ride an r1 (1liter) till you have been on a 250 (.25liter) for a year and my mate has almost killed himself on a 250 which is alot slower than my car haha! but my car isnt slow. so yer be carful if you get an r1 there is a reason they call a bike licence a temporary licence

The Lord replied: "My precious, precious child,
I love you and would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffereing,
when you see only one set of footprints in the sand,
it was then that I carried you."

Yeah, Motorcycle Lic, after MSF. .. seriously. Comming from somebody that has a bunch of miles, MSF is the way to go. Also, consider something used and naked. Every beginner makes simple mistakes and you ARE a beginner til ya make 'em. Bikes without fairings and bikes that are used are way less tragic to pick up and repair. Get yer miles on and then look for whatever suits ya. Maybe find an SV650 used, consider KLR if you are tall enough . . . maybe even a nice Supermotard.
