Reps: 423 (power: 0) | | | anyone know of a good pop up blocker???? I have a good fire wall, a good virus scan, and my security is stable on the computer but those blasted pop ups plaque my computer even if I am not going into a website.
So does anyone have a good pop blocker that will assist me in stopping this annoying storm of pop up bee's |

Depends what type of pop ups they are .... if it is just random website type pop ups then I don't know what to tell you. Run something like Spybot or Ad Aware to make sure there is no spyware on your comp.
If it is those grey boxes that say messenger on them, then there is a workaround in windows that will eliminate those.

Reps: 15 (power: 0) | | Yeah, that is one of the reasons I love firebird. I can tell it where I want to get popups from (so forums can notify me of PM's), but it will block any and all popups that I do not allow. It's wonderful.
To block things like MSN popup, here is a quick how-to I found from another site. It's probably one of the best and free ways to do it, without any third party software. To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", go to the
Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools (if you're using XP, you may have to click Classic
View on the left). Double-click Services, and Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose disabled and then choose
the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK.
On a little side note, Firebird also allows tabbed browsing and skins. Very customizable. Here is a resource site for it (skins, plug-ins, links, screenshots, etc). http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html

Hmmm... I've been using the blocker that comes with my Earthlink account so I'm not up to speed on various blocker apps at the moment. I saw that the Google tool bar is offering a blocker but I have no info on it beyond that. If you go to Google and do a search and review on commercial pop-up blockers I bet you will get a very large list.
Be careful with spy-ware detection programs, you may want to get a registry tool to save a snap shot of your registry first. You may also want to run the registry tool after removing spy-ware apps to get rid of the junk left behind. I happen to have 0 adware spy programs on any of my puters at this point.
Yes as stated above those nasty little grey boxes that pop up (even off-line) are nasty. Those instructions should dissable it. |
