| If the windpipe and the foodpipe had separate openings, I think there would be more regular, and more serious accidents than are caused by choking.
If my nose is blocked, I breathe through my mouth. But if I had a tracheostomy, and that became blocked, I'd die within minutes.
Goodness gracious, neither situation is ideal, is it?!
The only alternative I can imagine would be a diffuse surface area on our bodies which can perform gas exchange. This way it can't get blocked easily. |
