I only discovered that such a belief existed after becoming an atheist a couple of years ago and cruising the web trying to connect with others like me.
Have others had similar experiences or is YECism so common in the US that it is unmissable?
I ran into it in 1978 when Duane Gish came to the U of Minnesota campus to have a debate. My roommate was a graduate student in Biology and tipped me off to it. I went and was astounded at the number of church busses that pulled up, all from conservative evangelical churches. The biggest auditorium on the U of M campus was packed.
I thought Gish got clobbered. Of course, I knew the science but the "evolutionist" did disarm most of Gish's arguments. I remember being offended at Gish's misstatement of entropy. Remember, I was a grad student in Biochemistry and Gish has a Ph.D. in that discipline. I remember shouting out at the top of my lungs "Gibbs Free Energy!" at that point in the debate. Gish simply looked puzzled but plowed on. The evolutionist prof smiled.

Reps: 10 (power: 0) | | | I think this is related to this thread (apologies if other feel its not), but does anyone know if YEC is a uniquely (mainly American) Christian thing? I've often wondered what percentage of Muslims (or other religions) take their creation story literally and likewise ignore the real-world evidence. Anyone here had any experience of this?

I agree. I thought nearly every Christian was YEC. The televangelists, I thought, backed up the thought.
edit- I used "thought" too many times.
edit #2- Obbiquiet, you have a really nice house, dude.
