I only discovered YECs a year or two ago. I wouldn't have believed they existed until I dug deeper into the lower stratums of the web, but even now I have my suspicions they are merely mis-shapen humans.

Joking aside (or was I?), it's true they mainly reside in the USA, along with all those other cults. "Only in America," we find ourselves saying all too often...

This is so true. There is a direct correlation between The Bible Belt and national academic ranking. States like Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas all have SHAMEFUL national rankings all in the 40-50 out of 50 States. What is even sadder is that most of these types are so uninformed and SO unaware they do not even know what their own State ranks against the other 50 states in Education. They become offended and say, "We have a FINE education system!!" I say, "You think 44/50 is "fine"??..they then get a quizzical look like they had never heard this before. It is in the paper several times a week. I think it is easier to stick their head in the sand. These types would actually prefer that their children know the story of Moses parting the Red Sea than actually know Geometry, Trig, or even how to spell multi-syllabic words for that matter....sad.

I do believe it is mandatory..to have some of the beliefs they do and to educate others with these beliefs education has to be the enemy and has to bebroadcasted to be such. I actually heard one man refer to Calculus as "deviltry".

I grew up as a YEC, although that exact term was not used. I "saw the light" a few years ago. However, my family and my wife's family are all YEC, they have even suggested we watch the Dr. Dino videos, "because they will explain everything" The majority of people in my town are YEC, and some have also suggested Dr. Dino.

Just a month ago I was talking with my kids and we were discussing the geological column and the time it took to lay the column down, and my sister said, "If you think that actually happened."
Not that she has read up on the geological column, but by gum the world is not that old!

These Dr. Dino videos sound like mental opiates for the intellectually challenged. I like that they will "explain everything". Yet sound scientific edication with real evidence does not-No because it does not draw the conclusion they want to buy into. You should ask these people if the Earth is young how that helps their case? If it were 2 days old it still does not prove a God, Heaven or hell..that is what is so weird about the YEC mentality to me...it does not prove a thing it only makes people look desperate, foolish and devoid of any type of real education.

This is true. Here in America many people have NEVER traveled outside of America and unbelieveably many not outside their home State or neighboring States. Many of the opinions people like this have are shaped (imbedded) by their church or community. They get their global information from American Network News so even that has a slight slant. There is much I love about America but the narrow minded ignorance that seems pervasive in certain regions is not one of them. I traveled to Europe several times (My mom is a native of the Netherlands) I find the people to be much more open minded and more "global." I enjoyed the UK also, very much! I found in England that people with even a minimal education seem pretty sharp and aware. I like to talk to people on the street and in shops, etc. I have been to Egypt as well. Even that was much sdifferent than is portrayed on American television. I was expecting to get taken out by a suicide bomber, instead I found the people to be very warm and friendly. I had person after person tell me Americans are always welcome here, our problem is not with you but with some of your governments policies. The people were very respectful of me as I was of them. I respected their customs. I dressed modestly, etc.

I've never met anyone in real life that was a young earth creationist.
While I was growing up my mother worked in the Museum of Natural History in NYC and my sisters and I spent a lot of time there.
In the Catholic schools that I attended, the theory of evolution was taught and YEC was never mentioned.

Well I'm not really sure how I was introduced to YECism. I loved Jurassic Park and became really interested in dinosaurs, I had all these books that said dinos were 65 million years old (or whatever it is )and I just assumed it was true.

My parents aren't really YEC so it wasn't forced on my by them. I think it may have been when I came online and heard you have to believe in YECism to be a Christian, etc so I just accepted what I was told, especially since "evolution" sounded so stupid (the strawman version, cats from dogs) and I generally trusted Christians.

When I discovered what evolution actually is and saw the evidence it just made more sense. I've also became much more skeptical about things (I used to believe in alien abductions, etc but not really anymore) and less trusting of people, I no longer take things at face value.

I noticed the same thing when I went to Cuba a year and a half ago. Everyone despised the US policies toward Cuba, but they never let this taint their treatment of Americans. The people of other countries seem to make the distinction between people and government so much better than we do.
