Now YOU wait a minute, Rob!” It was Seamus’ turn to chase down the bard, although he refrained from physical forms of force. Stepping in front of the minstrel he demanded, “You can’t bash my head into a wall, lecture me and then just walk away.” Seamus calmed visibly then spoke in his usual, gentle, rich timbre, “I’m sorry for losing my temper back there. You are right, I know nothing of this road I’ve chosen and I need a guide.” Taking out a rumpled, dirty cloth Seamus placed it on his forehead to stem the flow of blood, “Just try to be less… abrupt in your guidance, will you?”
"The head was unintentional, but I was hoping that it would rattle that stagnant brain of yours!" Robert eyed the boy sternly for a moment before shaking his head. "Don't use that, you'll get infected and I can't be bothered to play nursemaid to a feverish little soldier boy. I've spent my entire life building a reputation of irresponsibility and I don't plan on letting you ruin it." The bard twitched his eyebrow upward before digging into his pack. "Here use this-" Out twirled a silk handkerchief. "-And this." In the other hand appeared the water bottle. "And you might try to act less like a snobby aristocrat when it comes to receiving my guidance, eh?"

"Now!" Robert's wide smile reappeared, the spat forgotten. "Walk with me. Talk with me. And please, let's hurry back to that drink before it sprouts wobbly legs and teeters off."

Nodding at the ranger's apology, Kane responded, "It is well, friend. May we meet again under less... drastic circumstances." Under cover of bending to scoop up the coins, he added in a whisper, "Have you caught the bear, or the bear you, I wonder? Pardon me if I misunderstand." He winked and straightened, turning as he was being introduced.
Michael nodded back to Dawn Lynx in acknowledgement of his greeting, but then the Pra Yer had the presumption to comment on his personal affairs. Michael was usually the first one to laugh at a well delivered jibe, especially about himself, but this fellow unwittingly trounced upon one of Michael’s few sensitive spots. No one, but NO ONE, joked about his feelings toward Asha. “You DO misunderstand, Pra Yer, if you think you have been given leave to comment on things of which you know NOTHING.” Michael looked the Pra Yer up and down in irritation then concluded, “You’d best be asking yourself the same, boy, Asha’s ears are rather sensitive. Or hadn’t you learned that by now?” Without waiting for a response, the ranger took his brother upstairs to bed, but not before he stopped at the bar and grabbed a bottle of brandy from a startled barkeep.

After seeing Jace settled in for the night, Michael took his brandy and climbed out the window. It was an easy climb to the roof for the experienced ranger, but not an enjoyable one. Michael felt bad enough at being stuck in this city, but now Asha was here too, dredging up feelings better forgotten, and some insolent stranger came along and stomped on his raw heartstrings. The man had already ruined a promising drunk for him, albeit unwittingly, but how many errs did Michael have to let pass before giving the man a wake up call? If he listened to the Lord he’d have to say 70 times seven, but Michael wasn’t in a listening mood. Consequently, the ranger was in the most isolated place he could find in a crowded city with the most powerful drink he could manage at a moment’s notice. Whoever the barkeep was bringing the brandy for would have to wait for another bottle.

Michael plunked down at the ridge of the roof, leaning back against the chimney. The stench of still smoldering buildings mixed with the malodorous scent of death and decay, all of which had been drenched in the odd flood. The smell was indescribably unpleasant, but after all Michael had been through in the last 36 to 48 hours a mere stench would not scare him away from his only chance for solitude. The ranger knew he’d be in the company of several people for the next few weeks, perhaps months, one never knew how long an adventure was going to last. Bringing the bottle to his lips, Michael let the fragrance of the vintage overshadow the other smells for a moment before taking a long draught of the amber liquid. It burned pleasantly as it traveled down his throat to his belly and that belly burned with more than liquid fire. “Asha,” he sighed, the weight of many years of regret on his shoulders, “I should have fought for you all those years ago.”

Mina simply nodded and moved into position with Asha, laying her hands on Jace's chest and forehead as she agreed with the Pra Yer. Once they had gotten back to their feet, Mina humbly bowed her head and thanked Asha for her assistance. "Thank you, Aunt Asha." she said wearily. "Especially for helping Jace." she cast a glare at Michael, but continued talking to Asha. "I hate to imagine what would have happened if he wasn't purified. I appreciate the offer for True Rest, but may I request that you only give it once Jace has been given the same? I will be fine in the morning; I just might get up an hour or two later than normal, if possible. Jace needs it more than I, I fear."
Asha enveloped Mina in a comforting embrace, “Thank you for your faithfulness, Mina. I am gratified to know two of the people I love best have become good friends.” When Mina requested she administer True Rest to Jace first Asha agreed, “You are too weary to be argued with, bairn, so I will accede to your wishes.” Just then she saw Michael at the bar briefly before he hauled Jace upstairs over one shoulder. My but he was in a foul mood! The tall Pra Yer had heard what Lynx said to the ranger and Michael’s response mystified her. Why should Michael be so offended at Dawn Lynx’s joking about her Pra Yer name? Asha had no time to think on that now, there was plenty to occupy her time before she would be able to seek out the perturbed ranger.

"An honor, Grand Master." Kane bowed gracefully, then and adjusted his circlet, flashing a grin. "And it is well met, Sir and Madam Gottenkrieger. As to whether I am so well-acquitted as Master Red Bear observes, well... " His grin widened and the light in his eyes danced. "It is always best to give the appearance of good faith when in the presence of certain specimens of bear, would you not agree, Grand Master?"
Asha ignored the younger Pra Yer’s ribbing. She had hoped Dawn Lynx would have learned more about the appropriate times to joke in the years since she’d last seen him, but it seemed such was not the case. Perhaps the man was simply plagued with incurable bad timing, and the inability to cease using bad jokes. He’d teased her about her Pra Yer name when they were at the monastery together, when she’d still been somewhat sensitive about the fact that her name was far less feminine than other female Pra Yer. Still, she had had no say in the choosing of her Pra Yer name, no Pra Yer did, for it was given to each hopeful by the council after he or she had taken the Vows of Commitment. Now, as Dawn Lynx joked about her name once more, the jibes bothered her not at all. Over the years Asha had come to love her Pra Yer name, much as she admired and respected the animal for which she was named, the grizzly bear.

Glancng at Manfred, his eyes narrowed. "I come on business of the Pra Yer order, Sir Manfred. Meaning no disrespect, but," he glanced to Red Bear. "I would speak first with the Grand Master."
A grizzly bear is nothing to trifle with and neither is Red Bear. Much as a grizzly becomes aggressive when her cubs are threatened, Asha, or Red Bear, becomes similarly so when anyone she loves is insulted. And Dawn Lynx was insulting Manfred, her best friend in life since Sathria.

Both Mina and Manfred simply nodded to Dawn Lynx, the Crusader's expression showing slight disapproval. "She and I are working as equals, to my understanding." he replied, "But I suppose it is a relief to not have to deal with the chain of command for once. Asha," he turned to his old friend, now that she and Mina seemed to have finished. "If I'm no longer needed, I will remain here until you are ready to form a report with me for Captain Reinhart. He requested that I inform him of our course of actions, so I need to confer with you on that when you are prepared."
Red Bear nodded to Manfred, and Mina, as they returned to their seats. Taking Dawn Lynx by the elbow she steered him toward the bar. She said not a word, but she conveyed quite clearly that Dawn Lynx had best cooperate if he knew what was best for him. Red Bear's strong grip communicated what words would do less effectively, this Pra Yer was displeased. When the two arrived at the bar a dutiful barkeep came up to take their orders, but was quickly sent scurrying away with a stern look from Red Bear. Any who saw this might snicker at the sight of a 300 pound man rushing off in such a way, but when a Pra Yer looks at a man that way he’s wise to run. Unfortunately for Dawn Lynx, he had no such option.

Asha turned her glare on him, her emerald green eyes piercing his gray ones for a few moments. Then the tension in her posture eased and the fire in her eyes dimmed, but she made it plain to Dawn Lynx he had erred. “Mayhap disrespect is not what you meant, Primate,” Red Bear scolded gently, but firmly, “but it is exactly what has been dealt.” She gave Dawn Lynx no time to respond before going on, “If the council has sent you then you are well aware that it was they who ordered me to seek out the assistance of Eyrel’s Paladins before I proceeded on this mission, and Crusader Gottenkrieger is correct when he says we are operating in equal authority on this mission. Therefore there must be some other reason you wanted to speak with me privately. I will be glad to speak with you on other matters after you brief both Crusader Gottnkrieger and I on the reasons for your presence here. I can assure you whatever you have to say can be said in front of him.”

Red Bear felt herself beginning to lecture and she derided herself for it, in an attempt to cease her discourse she concluded with unintentional gruffness, “Your… abrupt treatment of Crusader Gottenkrieger is unacceptable. You will give the Crusader, and the rest of the party, as much respect as you would any Pra Yer.” The tall red-head’s posture remained stiff, but it was now more about self-recrimination for her own staidness than any offense Dawn Lynx had dealt. When did I turn into old Wide Stick?, she wondered. He was one of the most reserved, stiff and demanding Pra Yer instructors at the monastery. Wide Stick’s real name was actually Wise Snake, but he was so harsh on some hopefuls that the younger Pra Yer had taken to calling him Wide Stick. Red Bear had few fears, but becoming an irascible, unlikable old instructor was one of them. She sighed quietly and waited for Dawn Lynx’s response.

"The head was unintentional, but I was hoping that it would rattle that stagnant brain of yours!" Robert eyed the boy sternly for a moment before shaking his head.
Seamus scowled as Rob made his less than sincere apology and continued to glower as the bard insulted him further. Then the man had the audacity to strip away the only scrap of material he had to use for a makeshift bandage!

Reluctantly, Seamus calmed and accepted Rob’s silk kerchief. Soaking it with the water the bard had proffered, the big paladin then placed the clean cloth over his minor cut. Seamus was about to thank Rob and apologize for his gruffness when the man insulted him yet again! “Snobby aristocrat?!?” Seamus asked incredulously, “Who do you think you have standing here, Rob? Antonio Morelli? If you think indignation is snobbery then you’d best take a look at yourself in the mirror, pal! I hope it doesn’t rain soon, else you’ll be drowning from all the water going into your nose!” A twinge from the cut on his head reminded Seamus why they were standing there arguing. He had gone to Rob asking for help and then he had nearly bitten the man’s head off when he didn’t like the advice he’d received. Seamus heaved a heavy sigh, “I’m sorry, Rob. I guess I just wanted to impress the girl with pretty words, like you said. Then you said that wasn’t me and it set me off something fierce. I guess I deserved a clout on the head far worse than this one.”

"Now!" Robert's wide smile reappeared, the spat forgotten. "Walk with me. Talk with me. And please, let's hurry back to that drink before it sprouts wobbly legs and teeters off."

If it does,” the paladin replied drolly, “I’ll buy you another.”

Kane very nearly struck out as Red Bear seized his arm. His smile changed from a light grin to a baring of teeth, and a heavy weight of menace settled inside him. He let himself be guided to the bar, though part of him wanted to twist free of the Grand Master's grasp and lash her with several remarks he hadn't quite formed yet. He was Dawn Lynx, no he was Kane Zephyr. No one handled him like a child, no one! He set himself, a sudden surge of glee permeating his thoughts.

Asha turned her glare on him, her emerald green eyes piercing his gray ones for a few moments. Then the tension in her posture eased and the fire in her eyes dimmed, but she made it plain to Dawn Lynx he had erred. “Mayhap disrespect is not what you meant, Primate,” Red Bear scolded gently, but firmly, “but it is exactly what has been dealt...I will be glad to speak with you on other matters after you brief both Crusader Gottnkrieger and I on the reasons for your presence here. Kane met Red Bear's glare easily, the venom in his smile relaxing somewhat as she went on. As her tirade reached its close he simply cocked his head and regarded her. The light behind his eyes continued to dance. She was not as formiidable as she might appear; he could see it in the way she stood and hear it in the way she spoke. Part of his mind howled in amusement. The woman thought him fooled by her fierceness! That same voice urged him to sink his fangs through this mighty facade and poison the softness beneath, to find the words to make her feel as worthless as dirt. [I[Pain[/i], it whispered. Harm her.

A flicker did pass over Kane's eyes then, but only for a moment. You will learn this, the voice of his mentor those years ago spoke against the first voice. You will learn the truth of your strength. White Sparrow was a hard man; he had once taken Kane deep into Anserak itself to teach Tracking. Follow me home, he said, and was gone. Yet he had taught Kane more than his skills. He looked at Red Bear, or rather into her, and if she saw the momentary struggle on his face it vanished. The grin and the light returned.

"As you wish, Grand Master," he said, with an incline of his head. "Shall I accompany you back to meet Sir Gottenkrieger, or shall I change clothes first?" He knew he had meant no one disrespect; there was no need to press the matter. He considered his wordss a moment. "You can call me Kane." The name still felt strange on his tongue, but it was the closest to an apology he wanted to get.

Mina let Asha go about her business with Dawn Lynx and returned to the table with her perturbed father. His expression softened as Mina came near, and he merely seemed weary. "Jace doing ok?" Manfred asked quietly as his daughter sat by him, looking into her tankard to see that her beer was virtually gone.

"He'll be better once Asha tends to him." Mina sighed, resting her cheek in her hand and leaning forward on the table. "Hey, barmaid!" she shouted, cupping her free hand to her mouth. "Another weissbier, please!" When the maid came by and supplied Mina with a new flagon, Manfred stopped her from taking a drink, holding his hand on the rim and leaning out of his chair to inspect it.

"Wait... its not on fire... the hell?" he murmured, the mead finally beginning to affect him, it seemed. ... Combined, of course, with the weariness and stress of the last couple days. "Darn Perians... doesn't anyone know how to copy the ONE good drink from Ember?" he grumbled on unintelligably and slumped back into his seat, reaching for his own drink. Mina merely shrugged and took a sip of her Emberian Weissbier, actually near the point where she was too tired to be angry about much.

If it does,” the paladin replied drolly, “I’ll buy you another.”

The storm of cold anger that clouded Robert's face made the little squall from before look like a sunshower. "Young man, I make my living bringing joy to others and solving violence peaceably, and you may be half my age and twice my strength, but if you ever call me an aristocrat again, I'll..." The bard spat out the word "aristocrat" like a curse and then trailed off, his eloquence failing him since making threats was not a normal pastime.

Never let it be said that Robert Brighton was one to hold onto grudges. Those first two words, "I'm sorry", said sincerely were enough to drive away the hurt and the storm and bring about the sun again. "Apology accepted. And I must offer one as well. I suppose my compliments were a bit backhanded, and I never meant to insult you. I just wanted to drive the impulse to change yourself out of your head. Too many young men ruin their chances that way."

A little hesitant but ever friendly, Robert slung his arm around Seamus's shoulders. "Now, let's hurry back to that inn. I'll listen to any question you have and refrain from insulting you, intentional or otherwise. But speak quickly, boy, I only have five minutes! Not to mention I left Mikel in the hands of a rather vicious looking blonde."

Pain, it whispered. Harm her.

A flicker did pass over Kane's eyes then, but only for a moment. He looked at Red Bear, or rather into her, and if she saw the momentary struggle on his face it vanished. The grin and the light returned.
Insolence. Lynx was laughing at her behind those enigmatic gray eyes of his. White Sparrow had earned the younger man’s respect, but Lynx did not seem willing to give it to anyone else. If he was to truly be a Pra Yer of worth he would have to learn not to treat others with such disrespect. He would have to learn not to be so presumptuous. Asha also knew she’d have to earn his respect, which she had apparently not done as his instructor in Mindshield all those years ago. Dawn Lynx had wanted to focus on the more physical Pra Yer abilities and had not truly given the attention to the lessons she would have expected from a Pra Yer. Still, he had done adequately enough.

He stood here now, seeming so haughty and prideful, as if he knew something Asha did not. How she would like to teach him the error of his thinking! How she would have liked to test his Mindshield abilities here and now! However, she had grown beyond such displays of her power, it was irresponsible and immature. The wise Pra Yer could see an inner battle going on behind those intelligent eyes of his. Then the veneer of cool confidence, which came off as arrogance, appeared once more.

Asha regarded the younger man, suspecting he truly did not receive what she had offered in the spirit of instruction. If this mission was to succeed the entire party would need to be unified, without unity they would be doomed to failure. How could she expect such a diverse group to work together in harmony if two Pra Yer could not even see eye to eye? Later Asha would seek the Lord for guidance in how to deal with this man who seemed so full of himself. She knew a truly fine Pra Yer warrior resided within Dawn Lynx somewhere. Lord, she prayed silently, help me to bring him to the fore. Once again, Asha determined to seek the Lord for help with the younger Pra Yer. For now there was other important business at hand.

Thank you, Kane,” Asha said sincerely, “I would like that, and you may call me Asha when we are relaxing about a fire or in a tavern such as this.” “However,” the tall woman continued, “when we are operating in an official capacity it would be best if we use our Pra Yer names.” Asha stole a glance over at Manfred, who appeared calm. The intuitive Pra Yer knew, though, that he did not like to be kept waiting. Asha motioned for Kane to precede her over to the table. As they walked across the room she said, “I know it is not pleasant to smell of stale brews and candle wax, but if the council thought it so important to have two Pra Yer on this mission then you’d best be giving us your report now, then you will have the rest of the night to yourself. We will meet again at sunup.” The two of them sat at the table with the Gottenkriegers and Asha looked at Kane expectantly, “Report, Pra Yer.”

The storm of cold anger that clouded Robert's face made the little squall from before look like a sunshower. "Young man, I make my living bringing joy to others and solving violence peaceably, and you may be half my age and twice my strength, but if you ever call me an aristocrat again, I'll..."

Twas you who called me an aristocrat, if you‘ll remember, Rob,” Seamus reminded gently, “but if we can agree that neither of us is one of those carrion then we have nothing to argue about.” Seamus had then apologized to Rob for his anger.

"Apology accepted. And I must offer one as well. I suppose my compliments were a bit backhanded, and I never meant to insult you. I just wanted to drive the impulse to change yourself out of your head. Too many young men ruin their chances that way."

A little hesitant but ever friendly, Robert slung his arm around Seamus' shoulders. "Now, let's hurry back to that inn. Not to mention I left Mikel in the hands of a rather vicious looking blonde."

Seamus almost laughed when the shorter man tried to grasp him about both shoulders. Finally, Rob had to settle for slinging his arm over one of the giant paladin’s shoulders as they walked back to the tavern, “Five minutes? That isn’t long to discuss matters of wooing a woman, Rob. Best leave it to another time.” The bear of a man looked down at his friend, “I’d guess that Mikel can handle himself with women far better than I could.” Then Seamus realized what the minstrel had said about having only five minutes and curiosity overtook him. “What sort of appointment could you be having in the middle of the night, Rob?”
