I'm not German, but I love German Hefe Weizen! I especially love König Ludwig, Löwenweisse and Weihenstephaner. Also, I looooooooove the extremely hard to get (over here at least) Fässla Bambergator, a smokey, slightly honey-ish but still fairly bitter beer.

I don't like pilsner types (from any country - they are too bitter and bland for me, I like strong tastes), but my husband likes Bitburger.

Then there's Belgian beer, and Dutch beer, but I'm pretty sure that none of you are able to get the good Dutch beers (no, Heineken, Grolsch, Amstel, etc. are not good beers, they are pilsners ) because good dutch beers are all microbrewed. If anyone is going to Amsterdam, I know a local Amsterdam brewery that is very good, Het IJ (they have Het IJ van Columbus, IJwit, IJndejaarsbier, Natte, Zatte, Speciale Vlo). Pubs that specialize in special beers will have it - sometimes on draught, which is even better.

Belgian beer deserves a thread of its own actually. It's the best. If I could, I'd move to Belgium: politer people, more disciplined pupils in school (over here it is dramatic - and I plan to go into teaching ), more catholics (LOL - over here, half of the country is protestant), BETTER FOOD, THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD, CHOCOLATE, houses are still cheaper. (you see that for me, food and drink is the only thing that counts, really! )

I'll just have an ice cold Dos Equis with a wedge of lime and sit quietly in the corner

I had a taste of Budweiser Budvar last time I was on the continent, and was surprised by how good of a beer that is, especially when compared with the American beer of similar name.

Rebekkah, my husband is positively a beer-snob, and insists that Belgian ales are heads above all other beers. He goes on and on about how they mature on the palate, the aromas, oxidation....

Personally, I'm very content with English Ales that are nearly meals in themselves.

LOL, I think I'm a beer snob too. The best Belgian beers are traditional (not commercial) gueuzes IMO, extremely sour traditional beer, sometimes with cherries in them (then they are called kriek - well, technically kriek is made of lambic, and gueuze is made of lambic of different ages) but I prefer them without - although kriek can be excellent, at least traditional kriek is.

Traditional gueuzes and krieks are hard to find and expensive, unfortunately.

Another favourite type of Belgian beer of mine is trappist, brewed by trappist monks. The best are, IMO, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Orval and Achel. I don't like Chimay trappist, and I don't care much for Westmalle.

Dos XX was my Mexican beer of choice when I was in Cancun last spring. Not a bad beer at all. (I think I like Modelo better though.)
