Reps: 12 (power: 0) | | Do you mean Linux? I've never heard of a programming language called Lenix...And if you do mean Linux, Linux isn't a programming language either, its an operating system (like DOS/Windows). You'd probably need someone to program a Linux program in a programming language. I would imagine you would probably be looking for someone to program in C or C++.
What sort of program are you looking for? I don't code much (do HTML/ASP/etc.) but I might be able to point you in the right direction.
One place to go to hire programmers is www.rentacoder.com and another is scriptlance.com.

I've done *ALOT* of Unix/Linux programming... what do you want? Let's talk here. Why would you need to PM for this request? |

It was a misspelled word. I'll send you a PM with some information on what he's after.

Hi Grommit.
I can tell you what JR needs and you can take it from there.
We have a friend that has had some trouble with the law. He has been denied his computer for online access, but I did talk to him P.O. and gave him an idea that he agreed to consider if we can do it. Neither of us know anything about programming, so we are going down a blind ally here.
The idea, simply put, is to create a program that would be installed on a laptop computer that would allow VERY limited access to the internet. The ONLY access that will be allowed is for Email and an online messenger service, such as ICQ or MSN Messenger.
It needs to be set up so that clicking on links in either the email or messenger service will NOT allow access to the site. I would LOVE to be able to have it set up to allow access to Christian Forums. This person is a Christian and could benefit from the fellowship here.
The security aspect of the program must be so tight that once written someone can not over ride it at all, even someone like yourself.
Of course, we are willing to pay for this, but the funds are somewhat limited. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
God Bless!

What kind of trouble? We are walking a fine line here buddy... be truthful. So far so good, it's VERY doable, but the last part where you want it where even people "like me" can't break it is impossible... atleast for me. I really doubt anyone can make such a system. Someone is going to over look something and someone somewhere is going to find it. I can, however, make it secure enough that it will convince your friends P.O. that it will be designed in a way that will prevent most seasoned users from defeating the system, but, I can't and will not promise it will be impossible to break. It's going to take alot of effort... This isn't a overnight project. Whats your time budget? Of course, we are willing to pay for this, but the funds are somewhat limited. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Hey now, last thing I want is to take some kids allowance. (What do kids earn nowadays anyways???) I've been in similar situations as "JR". I'm not allowed to use computers outside of work and school but I'm currently VNC'd into my friends computer, (he's in portland), and accessing this site through his network. Otherwise I'd have to beg and cry to be here and that would take another 3 months to get approved.
Anyways, sounds like a challenge... Send me a PM. I got more 'personal' questions to ask you and your "JR" friend. This will be very very intresting... I have an idea. It will all depend on how corrupt you want to be with this...
Talk to you soon... |

use iptables (linux)
You can specify which hosts (presumably the mail servers and login.oscar.aol.com) to allow and deny all other traffic.
allow outgoing tcp traffic on ports 25, 143, 110, 5190, 80--you can even log all traffic if you want and email it to his PO automatically.
DROP everything else.
don't give him root access. he doesn't need it to run it well. the PO should set the password.
disable single user mode; disable booting from anything else other than the hard disk; password protect the bios
do a minimum installation; set all scripts/binaries to root read/execute only (something like chmod root * -R; chgrp root * -R); except pine (for email), write/talk (for instant messaging), lynx (for browsing the web). X windows or not X windows...that is the question.
disable all unnecessary services.
disable him access to /bin/chmod to prevent him from executing other files such as cracks exploiting security vulnerabilities leading to escalation of local priviledges.
also disable /bin/mount to prevent him from using a cdrom or floppy drive (check /etc/fstab to make sure it's not there).
should take you a few hours to set up and test.
if I had that setup on my computer, I wouldn't be able to break it (unless I threw it off a bridge). to prevent him from opening his laptop and trying to reset the bios, have your PO paste a seal (the ones which are impossible to get off without tearing them) over the screws and sign it.
if you want, I can help you set it up over IM over a weekend.
If you can set up a laptop like this and ask your PO to get his computer expert friends in law enforcement to try to break it, he might agree to it.

Trouble with the law? Obviously you are referring to a judges ruling. Usually when they make such a ruling they are not referring to what you can or cant do with a personal computer but that if he/she uses one at all it will land them in jail/juvi again. Obviously he got off easy and can still use one but not connect to an ISP any longer so I’m guessing he is a minor. I wouldn’t even suggest your friend use one of those stand-alone email machines that only connect to the net to send and receive email. There is a reason they pass such rulings but I have no clue why in this case, not that it matters. If he was hacking or doing kitty script stuff then he may have gotten off easy. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
