A law legalising abortion up to the 10th week of pregnancy has come into force in Portugal, putting it on a par with most European countries that allow the practice.
The legislation which came into effect on Sunday, however, imposes a mandatory three-day reflection period for women seeking an abortion.
The mostly Roman Catholic country also grants doctors the right to refuse to carry out abortions on moral grounds, with some estimates suggesting up to 80 per cent will object.
The abortions are to be offered free of charge.
