I'm a stay at home mom as well. We've survived on one income by the grace of God ( and the help of the government! ) Or daughter has a disability so we get disability support and such and that certainly helps. She really needs me home as she has frequent appointments and requires very particular care. I also have a 9 month old boy and am a nursing mom. i'm needed at home right now and I probabaly won't fully re-enter the workforce for at least . . .3 years. Although I may begin some part time work in a year or so . . .
We've made sacrifices. One car family , even though my Dh works an hour away and I'm stuck at home every day We don't have cable , we seldom eat out and we're careful with our money. We also have little to no debt other then our car. ( Which , in my opinion is TOO much!) I don't really consider these as huge sacrifices and would gladly make more if needed. The hardest thing to give up is the computer - I love my high speed internet! But w may have to do it now that our rent has gone up
Anyway , you just have to sit down , make a very realistic budget and decide if and where you can skimp.
Best ofluck with all the potental changes coming up in your life!
I will get this started as I do not see another place for those of us that stay at home!
I am a mom of two beautiful girls. Ted and I have been married for 9 years. We are both teachers but I am now working from home with my candle business to be with our girls.
I love meeting other moms, even thought that are not at home all the time!
I look forward chatting with you!

I've been a SAHM for 25 yrs. We didn't have budget cuts since I never worked and then quit to stay home (although I did work for about 7 months when my first two kids were 2 & 1. It was a disaster, so I haven't tried it again.) We've homeschooled for over 15 yrs now as well.
I will be as soon as baby is here. For now I am SAHW (stay at home wife).

Hello Stay at Home Moms! I have a question for you... How do you survive on one income? What cuts did you have to make? I am currently a teacher, but my school district is making cuts, and I might be one of them... My husband and I are TTC, he has a pretty good job, but with our mortgage, student loans, and some credit card debt, I don't know if we can survive... I guess I am looking for some advice, and prayers Thank you
I haven't had to make any cuts as of yet. We live really very simply.
Since I have celiac disease, we cannot have any of the foods in the home that I cannot eat or touch. We get almost no pre-packaged anything except canned (tuna, veggies) or dried items (beans, rice, noodles kind of thing), and all the items I need to cook breads/pastries we get between two Asian markets.
Meat comes from the Kosher butcher in Frankfurt... we are really frugal as to how we eat and use meat.
Veggies/fruit are generally fresh and seasonal... eggs, sugar, oil and veggie shortening are staples. (hehe)
We don't go out or purchase a lot of videos and music.. we just do stuff together.
We're paying off a credit here, my credit back home (yay due to exchange rate, this will be way easier!!) and our rent and heating/electric.. we're squeaking by for now. Hopefully in a year or two we can have that all paid and get a car. (then that will add other costs, but enable us to get around by ourselves without the bus/train or friends)
I grew up in a SAHM environment (grandma, mom and one of my aunts) so I learned early about how to shop cost-effective and stockpile items that are on sale to have on hand when they aren't.. freezing and canning. (Though I can't seem to convince my DH that a freezer IS a needed item for us)
