Oh c'mon! I can see every fundamentalist on here doing the same thing if the situation were reversed.

Seen many bills with a mark like this???
I haven't.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
"It's ok to go off on a rabbit trail provided that you catch the rabbit."
It changes the nature of the question, would you be happy with this on your bills?
Your question assumed it would be alright as "everyone" was represented for because "god" was an ambiguous term refering to any higher power. What about people who do not believe in any higher power?
No, I wouldn't be happy with it, but I'd have to live with it. We live in a Republic (though some like to think of it as a Democracy) which means we elect people to act in our best interest. Those people cannot please everyone, all the time. As long as it doesn't infringe on your rights (and the phrase "In God We Trust" does not infringe on your rights) then it should be considered legal.

Just that this is obviously not a common practice.

I'll agree that it's funny. However, I probably see the humor different than you do.

The Republic vs Democracy discussion has nothing to do with this - the jump to "you can't please all the people all the time" has nothing to do with the distinction between them.
As far as it being illegal.
Actually it does. It is violates the first amendment.
"In God We Trust" does not necessarily have to refer to just the Christian God.
However it's clear that that was the intent based on the circumstances in which it was added to the currency. It was put on paper money under the exact same circomstances that "Under God" was added to the pledge. It was to make a statement that the US was different from "Godless" Communists in the USSR at the time and it was Judeo-Chistianity that was assumed to be the god of choice based on what Eisenhower said at the time.
Or, are you implying that the US government relies on Christian morality to administer things?
No. I'm saying that those who passed the law to put "In God we Trust" on the money thought that it was up to the government to speak for everyone on issues of religion belief. But it is not the government's place to suggest an opinion on those matters.
"In God We Trust" is not promoting anything.
It is just a statement of fact just like saying "We play baseball".
It's a fact hat I do not trust in a god. So what you are actually saying is that it's a fact that the majority trust in a god. So what to your thinking majority = all so those who do not agree don't matter.
Sorry. It is not a fact that we all trust in a god.
