My favorite part of the lecture is his illustration that as smart as Newton was, he still invoked God to explain the complex interaction of the solar system's mechanics. He thought it could not be explained without God. Yet, 100 years later Laplace explained it just fine without God, defying Newton's claim. |

Really? Laplace explained how the laws of motion came into being without God, shall we say, setting them in motion? Guy must have been brilliant. Had the key to the origin of the universe and its laws - why haven't I heard of this dude? There should be statues honoring him. |

Your response is a perfect example of what Tyson's lecture was about. At the limit of our knowledge, many people like to invoke God. Don't know the answer? Just say "God did it.!" It's a science-stopper. |

Or maybe, just maybe, the truth. |

Perhaps, but as long as it's not dressed up as science there's no problem. |

Yes, it's a subset of the one I linked. |

One of the most important things in science is to debate the theory, not the person. By saying "God must exist because Isaac Newton believed he existed", is completely irrelevant and does not make something true or false. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
