Theories aren't just made up out of thin air. Data suggested that all galaxies are speeding away fromeach other therefore extropolate backwards and they all come from a single point. This single point 'exploded' into the universe we know today. Subsequent evidence has more than backed up this theory.
And before anyone nitpicks this is a very simplified explaination....

sorry, I have to nitpick:
well it was verified after it was proposed. As it explains in that link I posted, it was originally posed by someone having studied relativity, and then justified later. Furthermore, I feel compelled to nitpick the word "exploded" ... it is very unhelpful to physicists trying to explain that it isn't like a bomb or something.

Point taken. I asked not to be nitpicked becaquse I knew some of my explaination wasn't the best and couldnt be bothered to improve it. I will function better when I wake up properly...!
Cheers for the clarification. I shall take back exploded and rather say expanded rapidly into the universe we observe today.
