Latest I hear is that the christmas special is already in pre production and about to commence filming.
Current rumours are that there will be another companion for the Doctor (in addition to the current one) in the next series.
I wondered if they had filmed it yet or not...and I read that as well about the companion. Also, Martha is supposed to be in 3 episodes of Torchwood (info. courtesy of wikipedia )
I've just been reading SFX and apparently they've signed up Kylie Minogue for the Christmas Special. Let's see how many 'Neighbours' jokes they can fit into the script.
Latest I hear is the Kylie Minogue will appear in the next christmas special as a "non bad Lead character" the episode is called "Voyage of the Damned" and will follow on from the events at the end of the last series (still cant believe its over for another year but you guys in the US will love it when it starts there!)
Meanwhile the second series of Torchwood is currently filming in Cardiff and caused a mini panic when they set of a small explosion in the town centre for one scene. (what with the problems we have had over the last few days and all!)

Doctor Who does have something of a history of waking people while filming effects sequences. Apparently the tank in last year's Christmas Special woke a few people up. But they really ought to have thought more carefully about that one.
The BBC have announced the details of who will be the new companion in the next series however I will not reveal it here as this would be a bit of a spoiler for our US friends who have not yet seen the new series.
