Old Proverb: Sowing Wild Oats

When I was in my younger days we had a proverbial expression called "Sowing Wild Oats." It applied to people in their teens and 20s that went through a wild phase then left it behind. It's been around a long time -- much longer than the "immutably born gay" template -- and it's still here, showing that not everyone is "born gay" anymore than they are born drug addicts, or born alchoholics, or just "born promiscuous."

I think my whole generation went through it (I'm a boomer). We experimented with booze, drugs, and sex. Some went even further into bisexual and gay sex -- most giving it up years later while a few others stayed in it. There were the hippie communes, the wild parties, etc., etc. I even thought I was having fun doing some of that stuff.

Anne Heche is a more modern day example of it. Some of her quotes:

Suddenly, I knew what I was here to do, and I knew it the moment I saw this glorious woman, Ellen DeGeneres, across the room."

-Anne Heche, from the Advocate, April 30, 2000
When Heche and Degeneres appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss their newfound relationship, Heche stunned everyone (including Oprah) by stating, "I was not gay before I met her."
Heche, who said her father was gay, told everyone that it was time she lived her life "truthfully."
Heche to an OUT magazine interviewer:

"People, and children especially, need to know that there aren't any rules about what you should feel safe to explore in your own heart. I don't consider myself to be straight. And I don't consider myself to be a lesbian--though I'm by no means ashamed of it. Yes, I'm gay. I'm in a gay relationship. I just don't like any terminology."

Heche has now chosen to be heterosexual and to prove it she got married on last Saturday to Coleman Laffron, a Hollywood cameraman she met while working on a project with then lover Ellen. Was she secretly dreaming of a white, heterosexual Christmas while she was with Ellen? If she was, then can we theorize that many gay people really do want to be straight, but just haven't found the right cameraman/woman yet?

Anne Heche confesses that she went through a wild phase in her late 20s. She also said she was sexually molested by her father as a child. He died from AIDS in the early 80s.

If Anne was coming up in the 60s or the 70s we'd be saying yet another one "sowed her wild oats." It's not PC now days I suppose.

Lou Reed wrote a song about it called Walk on the Wild Side

Just making sure I understand what you are trying to say - gay people are only "sowing their wild oats", just going through a phase? They really all want to be heterosexual, but just haven't found the right (opposite sex) partner yet?

I haven't found a partner of the opposite sex yet, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm exclusively attracted to the opposite sex.

I'm not gay, but maybe I just haven't met the right guy yet..

I don't actually believe in gay/straight, I think almost everyone has the capacity to find fulfilment in a relationship with a person of either sex, most of us just happen to prefer one far more than the other.

Anne Heche is a flake. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that she is one seriously confused woman. If being gay is merely a phase one goes through in their younger years, how do you explain older gay men (like my husband's uncle who is well into his seventies and gay as a picnic basket)?

The OP brings up all of the common illogical stereotypes - gay people choose to be that way, it's just a phase, gay people really do want to be straight, all gay people are the product of bad parents and all gay people are the way they are because they were molested as children.

My opinion - Heche is bi-sexual. If she wasn't she wouldn't have been able to pull off a long-term relationship with a woman. She was rather hasty in coming out as a lesbian as the result of one relationship with a woman.

If being gay is something anyone can pull off, then I challenge you to find one solidly heterosexual man and ask him to enter into a one-year gay relationship with a man. See how he reacts.

It looks like it's your word against hers. She said she was only attracted to Ellen Degeneres and that relationship went about 3 or more years. She said it was a phase she went through like so many people I remember. She never went bi before, and she has no desire to go bi now. She wrote it off as a mistake and wants to move on with her life. I can relate to that.

As for your uncle, it sounds like he fits the "immutable gay template" a little better than Anne Hechce. The point is we are being lead to believe "once gay always gay." Looking at Anne Heche, and her own commentary, I'd have to say no -- certainly not for some people.

I have heard so many times hat I am going through a phase. I believe for some it is just that but for most it's simply a part of who we are.

Back to the OP, has anyone else heard the expression "Sowing Wild Oats"?
