As far back as I can remember when I was only about 3 , I was aware that when I did wrong it hurt the Lord and that would always break my heart. He never did anything to deserve the hurt He goes thru when His children fall. I was like this even before I was saved so now that I am a Christian I always want to do what pleases Him and make Him happy. If we would just stop and think about that when we are tempted to sin , instead of reacting how we want, we could resist in victory and walk in the Spirit more and not follow the flesh.
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
What we do affects others too not just us. And there can be devastating consequences, many of which cannot be changed. If we got our mind off ourself and how we want in this certain situation, and think of others how this will affect them, that would help. It would be good if we would always stop and listen. Tune in to the voice of the Spirit before we say or do anything. Too many just do things without thinking.
Psalm 78:1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
John 10:3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath
The Word of God says not to grieve the Holy Spirit. That stops me more often than anything - what God think, how He feels. The most important thing is I dont want to hurt the One I love or disappoint Him. I want all I do to glorify Him.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
The difference between you and most people is that you actually think BEFORE you act. I suspect if most people did that, they would act much differently. Too bad life doesn't have a rewind and erase button.
Oh, the messes we make for ourselves. And, yes, the hurt we cause God as well. I suspect sometimes God's heart must break when he sees the hurt, violence, anger, poverty, sickness and suffering in the world. Sometimes I wonder why he doesn't do more. But other times I wonder what else could he possibly do? It's just so sad.

He's done His part. The rest is up to us. He works thru us on our behalf thru faith

Our desire should be to be more and more like Him, to keep on being changed, to be holy for He is Holy. Then we will be less likely to hurt Him, good post.

Col. 1:9 > For this reason we also, from the day we heard of it, have not ceased to pray and make [special] request for you, [asking] that you may be filled with the full (deep and clear) knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [in comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God] and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things-- 10 > That you may walk (live and conduct yourselves) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him and desiring to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in and by the knowledge of God [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition].
I can remember the first time I read this. I was waiting on a bench for a bus to go home from work, devouring the Word, washing myself clean from a day in the world, and wow! I thought my heart would burst, I so wanted to please the Lord. Over 20 yrs. later I can't think of anything better to do than to please the Lord.
Look at beautiful Jesus, what manner of man He was.
John 8:29 > And He Who sent Me is ever with Me; My Father has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.
This is my desire, that today, I will do what pleases Him. When I do what pleases Him I am satisfied the most, and the Lord is glorified in me.
Going back to the above scripture, can you imagine how it must have been for Jesus and the Father when Jesus was made to be sin? They had never been separated. They were always one, in perfect harmony. Jesus said, "He Who sent Me is ever with Me; My Father has not left Me alone.." And then He cries from the cross, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" All our sin poured onto Jesus in that moment. For the first time ever, Jesus refers to His Father as "my God", instead of "Father". He, the sinless One, who always did those things that please the Father. He, taking our sin our, being made to be sin for us, so we would never know the horror of being forsaken of God.
Oh, thank You, Jesus! Thank You, Jesus.
Hear the words of the song by Darlene Zschech of Hillsong: Worthy is the Lamb Thank You for the cross, Lord Thank You for the price you paid Bearing all my sin and shame In love you came and gave amazing grace
Thank You for this love, Lord Thank You for the nail-pierced hands Wash me in Your cleansing flow Now all I know, Your forgiveness and embrace
Worthy is the Lamb Seated on the throne We crown You now with many crowns You reign victorious High lifted up Jesus, Son of God The darling of heaven crucified Worthy is the Lamb Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy are You, Lord! Worthy!
How can one not worship and adore precious Jesus, who paid such a price? How can we not worship Him with our lives, pleasing Him in all we do?
Jesus, we worship You. Father, we give You our lives, desiring to please You in all we do. You say without faith it is impossible to please You. Seems so small that all You ask is that we believe You and do what you say. We will show our love to You in this way. For all You've done for us....
Thank You.

Second, practice your religion without adulterating it or toning it down. Third, emphasize love and make it your working force, for love is central in Christianity. Fourth, study the non-Christian religions more sympathetically to find the good that is within them in order to have a more sympathetic approach to the people.”

Until the life of the Christian is so obviously different from the life of the sinner, why should the sinner want what the Christian has?
Very good post, and true
I wonder sometimes if watching us sin and fall away from God is like a dad watching his child fall over their own two feet and seeing them get up again and again. All the time his arms are open wide waiting for them to take some help from him.
