Used to happen to me all the time. When I was in my late teens I was out of work for a while and pretty much broke, so couldn't afford the bus fares from my parents house (out in the country) to the Army. So I used to hitch hike there and back, in full uniform, cap and all.
The amount of lifts I got because drivers thought I was the police waving them down was amazing.....

Also when doing the pub round on a Friday with the papers, there was one particulaer pub that was very popular with students, and there used to be afair bit of the old Wacky Baccy in the place. I've walked in there several times to sell papers and seen a dozen or more tobacco tins quickly vanish out of sight.

The ladies can play a mean tambourine (and God help you if you are standing too close to them when they are playing them!)
Don't know whether the Army still incorporates tambourines as they did when i attended in the early 70's but it sure added to the song being sung!
