It all depends on the velocity. The example of the coin is that it's velocity is not enough to put it into 2 or 3. You could, for example giving the right circumstances, throw the coin in so fast that it would ramp up the other side of the curved shape. The problem with earthbound orbits is that they have friction to deal with and therefore loose energy and therefore fall into catergory 1 if they cannot originally escape the "basin".

I don't know which type of orbit the earth has but I do know that the moon has the type 3 orbit (it is spirally away from us).
Thanks Maxwell and I_Love_Cheese for the clarification. That helps me understand better (and I didn't know that about the moon, either. I assumed it would behave the same as the earth).

I'm not really mathematically minded, but I enjoy concepts. I latch on to any illustrations and analogies given to help me understand.

Don't worry too much, this won't happen for about another 12 Billion years.
However, some scientists also believe that the orbit of the earth will be pushed out to that of near Mars because of the pressure waves caused by the expansion into a Red Giant.

I have also heard that, but I didn't want to confuse matters.

Well you can go check out the last thursdayism parody that just came back with a new theory of how it all was different in the before time.

Thats funny but the joke is old by now, at least with AN it is always different.

Life imitates parody.

“That's where the truth lies, right down here in the gut. Do you know you have more nerve endings in your gut than you have in your head? You can look it up. I know some of you are going to say 'I did look it up, and that's not true.' That's 'cause you looked it up in a book. Next time, look it up in your gut. I did. My gut tells me that's how our nervous system works.”
- Stephen Colbert

Ok, time for a history lesson. Newton proposed the inverse-square law describing gravity in 1687.Darwin proposed evolution by natural selection in 1859. That's 172 years later. The "evolutionists" didn't come up with gravity, nor is gravity (physics) related to evolution (biology).

sorry, im what you call open minded and willing to look at other options before shutting my mouth and accepting whatever told to me in a book(unless its the Word of God) especially when im being told how little is actually known about gravity
*bangs head on desk*

has scientists ever created a planet and a sun in a labratory to watch the effects of gravity??? if not how can they be so sure it happens at a larger level
Hear that strange rustling sound? That's Newton spinning in his grave.

Yeah, those evolutionists should stop teaching about gravity in Biology classes!

You are right dude! In fact, I think you should climb up the tallest building in your town and jump off it to show those evolutionist-gravatationalists a thing or two about being open-minded.

No, they haven't! until they do, I think science classes should be replaced by Bible-Study classes. So what if the Constitution says otherwise? So what if our cilivilization is entirely dependent on that science and the technology derived from it? I say we go back to the first century AD! It was good enough for Jesus!!

IceLady will become famous soon enough
*sigh*

Well, I can't believe I've actually registered just to answer this thread, but well...

AngryNotice, one thing which I've noticed you don't get and will probably never deduce on your own - gravity does not, and I repeat, IT DOES NOT cause circular motion. OK? Gravity is just a force causing two (or more) bodies at a certain distance to feel an attraction between each other. Nothing else.

Mass one, for instance, the Sun, and mass two, for instance, the Earth, attract each other with a certain force. Newton managed to derive its formula, which in fact is wrong, but like someone said, something like the 30th decimal. Good enough for most calculations, but worry not, the scientists know the second and the third order of the equation as well and use it when needed.

And that's it! Everything else, the circular motion, the spinning, the "fact" that the Sun stands still while the Earth is moving and all that, they have NOTHING to do with gravity (at least in the sense we're talking about).

Gravity causes two bodies to attract each other with a certain force called the gravitational force, by the equation mentioned here a million times.

Spinning of the body, once again, has NOTHING to do with that force we call gravity.

Is this simple enough? I mean, I teach elementary physics, and have never seen 13 years old kids do a fallacy like this, so I'm asking again to make sure.

You conflate Gravity with Evolution?
You are either the biggest parody of a YEC literalist or you are one of those "Mongo hate science...Mongo must smash science" types who glory in their own ignorance

Look at your very own following statement

(emphasis mine)
The hypocrisy of your statement may be lost on you
Of course, if you are (as I and others suspect) a parody of YECers, then the hypocrisy of the statement was most likely made on purpose
I suppose next you're going to propose that the speed of light (c) isnt actually the speed of light.

Should you ever find yourself jumping off, say...the Bank of America Tower in Seattle, then you can get back to us regarding the reality of Gravity.
As you near terminal velocity, you can figure out F=Gm*M1*M2/r^2 on paper (if you can do the actual math fast enough) to demonstrate exactly what is happening to your descending body.
On a simpler level, drop a spoon.
What happens?
F=Gm*M1*M2/r^2
Gravity is. The word "gravity" is just a descriptor of what happens (in regard to the event in question...the law and theory are two different things)

POE'S LAW
If the last quoted statement doesnt demostrate it, I dont know what ever will
This smacks far too much of "Have scientists ever created evolution in a laboratory?"
