Lucky you! I think without insurance, we'd be broke and in debt from all of my medical bills. I actually added it all up and just in the past year (well, technically it was the hospital bills of my delivery and then having my gallbladder removed 2 months after giving birth, so that would be only 2 months worth of bills) mine and my baby's bills would have been $57,725 if we didn't have insurance. |

wow!!!!!
we have "public" hospitals here that are free for anyone and everyone as I understand it
we also have "private" hospitals where you have to pay quite a bit .. you need private health insurance to go to a private hospital here |

But day to day not that bad. You just make do with what you got. Me and my wife cut out eating out and going out. Also buying extra things we really didn't need but wanted. Babies really don't need or require alot of things. My grandmother used to tell me about just giving my father and uncles spatulas to play with as babies and that would entertain them. Or sanding really well blocks of wood. Don't really need for babies all the things that one has now adays. Also you do get alot from baby showers and grandparents help out alot. |

The expenses you'll need to worry about will be buying baby things, prams, car seats, a cot, clothes, that kind of thing, if the money situation is a bit tight you can buy some of these things second hand (not the car seat though). If I were buying everything new it would cost me around £1000 which is around 2,500 AUD, but then again things tend to be expensive in the UK compared to the rest of the world. As it is because I've bought second hand it's going to cost me around £250 -- 600AUD - which isn't too bad.
You don't need to buy everything straight away, things like high chairs, baby gates, child proof locks can wait for a few months after baby is born. |

How can having a child really cost that much money??? I hope its different here in Australia....
You live in Australia??? (your flags are confusing, lol. )
I *think* you don't have to pay for having a baby in Aus...though I can't be absolutely sure...but I think that hospitals are free even for delivering babies...best to check it out though, like maybe go to your local hospital and ask them... |

Oops! See you've got that covered already...
I'm from England too (yay for the NHS)...and we're currently living in Ireland. Hospital stays are free here too, so we won't have to pay to have the baby, just the costs of everything once we've left the hospital... |

I breastfed DD for 17 months (and plan on doing the same with this one) so that cut out alot of expense. On clothing, I always buy bargains and never full price. Alot of times I'll buy for the next year at the end of the season because her growth has been pretty predictable. It's really not as bad as you hear in my opinion.
I shop around for toys too. And DD doesn't have half the toys her cousins have and she's just as happy if not happier. She mostly just gets toys for birthday or Christmas or from other people. I let my parents and DH's parents buy most of that kind of stuff and I'm not out a cent!
If you don't think your child has to wear name brand clothes, ride in the BEST car seat with all the BEST gadgets, have the BEST stroller, high chair, etc., you ought to be fine.
