In the past, I have read that it was customary to hold lighted candles throughout the service on this day. In the Western Church, this feast was/is called Candlemas.
Read about the Feast of the Meeting here.
Read about the Western observance of Candlemas here.

I put the icon of the feast on the dinner table and light the blessed candle. My son and I discuss the significance of the feast, then we pray St. Simeon's prayer together. Its very nice
February 3rd is St. Simeon's Feast but it is also the Feast of St. Blaise and so he is sort of associated with the Presentation. In the Western Church, it is customary to have your neck blessed with two crossed candles because St. Blaise is called on for throat ailments. The Western Rite Orthodox Church does this and I plan to attend their service for this.

Reps: 652 (power: 0) | | | Thank you Monica. I printed out the Candlemas link you provided - that has some great information on it. I have always heard of Candlemas, but wasn't sure what it was all about. I really enjoy learning how everyone celebrates in their own church. Thanks for sharing!! I'm looking forward to attending the service!!! I love being Orthodox and experiencing all the wonderful ways about it. Autumngirl | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
