the lil' critter is an ostracod. These are tiny members of the
crustacea. They are mainly aquatic, and a majority of the species are marine. The largest is only 3 millimeters long, and IIRC is from the bottom of the Indian ocean, well over a mile deep. These habitats are every stable- cold, dark, very little nutrients, not much competition. (Would you want to live there)?
Evolutionary theory predicts species stability when the environment is stable, and species change when the environment changes. Now, this little critter is not the same species as any know living species (but I don't totally rule it out) and was from an environemnt that is still present and still occupied.
What I found most interesting was that in
"only 200 million years" such an
"advanced" lil' critter evolved.
