I'm dirt cheat, so I'm repairing my own transmission. Its pretty interesting, and even more so if you are cheap. I needed some special adhesive and primer from loctite. If I were to order it from a distributor, it would cost me $60. Instead, I've got enough to do 10 transmissions off of ebay for only $20.
Wednesday, I painted the case and bell housing. Looks like I need to do a little sanding today, and apply a second coat of paint. The adhesive primer arrived yesterday, so all I am waiting for is the adhesive. I will try to cut new gaskets today and might take a look at the unibody.
My 300Z is fully rusted, in fact the chassis twists so much when I have it on jack stands, the doors don't close. I guess I probably should align it, and then weld in some new steel. A couple years ago, some drunk hit my parked station wagon, and demolished his saturn, and just bent my bumper. I often thought what would have happend had he hit the 300. It might have launched into the next county. Part of the fun of living in the rust belt...
Overhead welding while lying on the ground should be an interesting experience. The last overhead welding I did was in 1982, when I welded my football coaches pickup truck. We put in 1/4" steel plate everywhere, as the cab had broken away from the frame... It would just rock back and forth when you'd drive down the road. After all that plate, it was like a brick. Unfortunately, we did not fixture it properly. The steering and tranny linkage did not work after our welding... so, we did some more welding to extend them. It was a cool truck after that.
At the Bible camp I worked at, we had another winner. This truck had no floor, no ignition switch, loose tie rods, and the exhaust manifold was rusted through. You couldn't go over 35mph, as it would start shaking and wandering back and forth across lanes so badly, it wasn't safe. At 35mph, you could at least keep it in your lane, although it was work. It was a great work truck though, you just had to remember that there was no floor, and to keep the windows open, as the exhuast shut fumes right into the cab

I sort of got on a rant about SUV's. You know, I really don't care whether people have them or not, if they want one fine, if not thats ok. What gets my goat is when they say they have to have them, and then crab about how spendy the gas is.
An SUV exists because of its cool factor, and thats fine, if thats what you are into.
An SUV exits because someone want's to do off road stuff for fun. Thats cool too, not for me, but I know some that have a blast with it.
An SUV is justified, as its a must have. Nope, its a want that marketing has changed to a must have. Its too bad, as unless one has some financial reserves, a lot of folks will be in trouble. Thats the uncool part.
If you need to transport something, a Freightliner Sprinter, A traditional step van, a full size work van, or a 2 ton pickup with an open box are more appropriate. Same with the building trades. Few contractors use SUV's, unless they are towing a trailer or hauling a crew of guys. The numbers just don't work, and for them, its not a perception of being cool, its getting the job done.
Back when I worked on a farm, none of the vehicles had carpeting.... one needed to be able to hose out the mud, and they were a lot cheaper than cars. However, marketing changed peoples perceptions, as did the prices. In the early 90's I often thought back to my farm days, pickup trucks now had carpet, and cost a whole lot more than cars. Talk about a hit for the farmer who truely needed one. Its marketing changing peoples perceptions to wants vs must haves.
Eg, who needs 4WD on the floor or console. Having to get out and turn the hubs kept one from making stupid mistakes in using 4WD to go places one should not go, rather than using 4WD to get into trouble. I know, I had to pull a buddy out of a swamp once as it was his brilliant idea for a short cut... He used 4WD to get himself really stuck. But marketing changed the users perceptions. There has to be a lot of money in towing these days, just due to 4WD inside the cab. Marketing does a great job at swaying peoples wants into must haves.
As far as adverse conditions go... no way would I want to be in an SUV in ice or snow anymore, unless it had chains. Its way too scary as you don't have road feel. At least with chains, you have traction, but still no road feel. I find that incredibly uncomfortable. Otoh, in a car with a brick like suspension and chains, one can go just about anywhere... I remember more than a few times driving home in my 76 Chevelle, going through snow that was higher than my bumpers, (they would quit plowing during snow storms when I lived in IA) but at least I could feel the road, and rarely had to put the chains on. I also remember the 3-4 times with SUV's that I just about went over the side or got stuck tighter than a drum as I couldn't feel the road.

Not sure how I hit on this, perhaps its because its late, and I'm rambling.
As a youngster growing up, we sort of sat everywhere, except the front 4 rows It really didn't matter, other than the pulpit being about 7 feet in the air, made it challenging to see if you were too close. This was the norm... so one time pastor preached from the floor rather than the pulpit. It sort of blew him away that we were so far back, so he picked up the lectern, and moved it to the center of the church. It was memorable!!!
In college, occasionally I would attend church with a friend of mine who was our music minister. It seem 98% of the time we were the worship team, so it was rare that we just attended. Anyhow, she had this philosophy of sitting in the front row, so she wouldn't be tempted to look at others hair and fashions. I guess it made some sense.
As a young engineer, I became good friends with the bell ringer, and the organist. As a result, I sat upstairs, the music was cool, and we'd tend to banter about a little bit before and after the service. I guess there was probably seating for about 50 folks, but it was rare we had more than 10 or so people in the balcony.
One time, the bell got stuck, so I got invited to climb the bell tower to assist. We did that on a Monday night, I'd never been in a steeple before, even though my uncle at one time used to work either for or with a steeple jack. It was an amazing experience.
First, we got a step ladder and climbed through the cieling. Then there was this 20 foot ladder attached to the wall and that ended on a landing with a huge water tank. Apparently they used to collect water up there for horses years ago. Next is another ladder, but this one was 20 feet or so, but the next landing was 23 feet. You would climb to the top of the ladder, and then place you hands inbetween the stones to steady yourself while you climbed through the landing, and pulled yourself up. Now, one was in the bell room. Apparently some pidgeon dung had hung up in there, and it was easiliy disloged. The bell room was pretty much open, and it had a good solid inch of pidgeon dung on the floor. sort of messy, but it had been there for years, so it didn;t stink or anything. There was another ladder which continued up the steeple, but there was nothing to go up there for, and it looked like it was over 100 years old, so I didn't climb it. A most interesting evening.

Looks like I got on a political role today.. Thats rare, but my internet took a header, and I lost a big parts order... not cool.
Anyhow, here are some powerful blogs entrys I came across today.

Mohammed writes:
But I am not leaving this land because the bad guys are not going to leave us or you to live in peace. They are the same ones who flew the planes to kill your people in New York. I ask you in the name of God or whatever you believe in; do not waste your son's blood. We here have decided to avenge humanity, you and all the women who lost their loved ones. Take a look at our enemy Cindy, look closely at the hooded man holding the sword and if you think he's right then I will back off and support your call.
We live in pain and grief everyday, every hour, every minute; all the horrors of the powers of darkness have been directed at us and I don't know exactly when am I going to feel safe again, maybe in a year, maybe two or even ten; I frankly don't know but I don't want to lose hope and faith.
We are in need for every hand that can offer some help. Please pray for us, I know that God listens to mothers' prayers and I call all the women on earth to pray with you for peace in this world.
Your son sacrificed his life for a very noble cause…No, he sacrificed himself for the most precious value in this existence; that is freedom.
His blood didn't go in vain; your son and our brethren are drawing a great example of selflessness. God bless his free soul and God bless the souls of his comrades who are fighting evil. God bless the souls of Iraqis who suffered and died for the sake of freedom. God bless all the freedom lovers on earth.
Taking PFC Phelps home. I'm not one to get emotional, but this is incredibly powerful. I'm not going to pull excerpts out of respect. You need to read the whole thing.

For all the AMT's out there (otherwise known as A&P's)
I used to work on planes. It was a wonderful time, although I do not miss the days of trying to work upside down in the most contorted position imagineable, but those were rare.
Right now, NWA mechanics are on strike. In a nutshell, the path NWA is taking is to become the Walmart of the aviation world. Rather than being the best, being the safest, most comfortable, and best airline, they aim to become a cheap commodity. As a result, their overhead is way too high, and things have to give. I'm generally anti-union, but in this one case, I have to agree with the mechanics union. Asking your employess for a 25% paycut, huge layoffs, and then throwing out the agreements and asking for more when you know you will be declaring bankruptcy is plain underhanded and wrong. A businesses employees are its life blood. When a business specifically sets itself up to need skilled people, especially the rarer skills (old airplanes, make that really old, in order to keep costs low), and then asks them to work for less pay to still lower costs, something is wrong with strategic planning. I sure hope 200 people on an airliner don't have to die for NWA to see the light. It is sad, very sad, and the loss of Northwest Airlines is also going to be a major hit on US air travel. Otoh, they have locked themselves in a corner.
I do ask that people pray that no loss of life will occur, and that God will give comfort to the mechanics on strike, and a change of heart and strategic plan by NWA management.
Here is a wonderful piece off the unions message board.
THE FORGOTTEN MAN Author Unknown
Through the history of world aviation
Many names have come to the fore,
Great deeds of the past in our memory will last
As they're joined by more and more.
When the first man started his labor
in his quest to conquer the sky
He was a designer, mechanic and pilot,
and he built a machine that would fly.
The pilot was everyone's hero
He was bold, he was brave, he was grand,
As he stood by his battered old biplane
With his goggles in his hand.
But for each of our flying heroes
There were thousands little renown,
And these were the men who worked on the planes
But kept their feet on the ground.
We all know the name of Lindbergh,
And we've read of his flight into fame,
But think, if you can, of his maintenance man,
Can you remember his name?
Now, pilots are highly trained people
And wings are not easily won.
But without the work of the maintenance man
Our pilots would march with a gun.
So when you see the mighty jet aircraft
As they mark their path through the air,
The grease-stained man with the wrench in his hand
Is the man who put them there.

I think the car in the garage is a neighborhood concept. Perhaps in my neighborhood, it should no longer be called a garage, they are all in a back alley, and have very short driveways, none are attached to the house. In other developments, it seems the garage is even more forward and prominent than the house. Personally I think thats bad archetecture, but thats just an opinion.
Anyhow, in my neighborhood, few use their garage for their cars, even though we get hit with major snowstorms. We have other activity in our garages. In the newer developments, it seems people do keep their cars in the garage.
One neighbors garage is roughly 20X50 sq ft. He has a sound room in the back half, and a paint shop in the front. My other neighbor has a full blown cabinet shop in his. I have a small prototype shop in mine, but do keep my collector cars in there. The daily drivers are parked in the driveway.
What is the problem with white? Personally my garage interior is grey and tan, but when I finally get everything covered in drywall, it will be white, as will the floor. The reason is to show dirt, fluid leaks, or other problems. Quite a few of my friends have done so, and have found it very hard to find white concrete floor paint. There must be a reason.

A little over a year ago, I enrolled in an EMCOMM level 1 class. (emergency communioncations), in addition, sometime laterI also started on NIMS-700, an entry level class on the national incident management system. Since I knew I'd get busy, I did a marathon session on EMCOMM. 8 modules in 1 day, but there were 28 in total. Well, things got busy, and sure enough, I had to let it slide. Then of course the grant funding it no longer applied as it was taking so long, so I was out $$. After Katrina, I realized I should have gone ahead and finnished it anyhow.
About 2 months ago, I ran into a USMC major (ret) and we were discussing search and rescue operations. While he is long since retired from active duty, he currently volunteers with the USCG auxiliary, and highly recommended I get involved with CAP. I sent off for the intro stuff, got one call, but it looks like I have to take iniative to get things rolling which in reality, is probably how it should be.
Then the Red Cross leaves me a voice mail on Friday afternoon. Looks like I need to get back to them on Monday. I expect that I am far down on the list, so getting a call so early makes me wonder. It should be an interesting conversation to say the least.
This weekend I managed to miss an outreach seminary class but it got cancelled anyhow.
It look like me and continuing ed are like oil and water, but at least my FIRC went through without a hitch, and my nice new shiny green CFI cert with hologram arrived a couple weeks ago. I'm good to go for another 2 years.

He went over to the computer and was checking out the mouse. Apparently the cursor was of interest, and he became very fascinated in it. Well, his attention span is not that great, so he decided its time to clean his teeth and take a bath, thus giving me a little time to blog. He is a really good guy, unlike Jose, who decided to deleted my network printer one dad. Actually Jose is pretty decent too, just too curious for his own good. Well, Bruno just came back, so I better go get him some cat food, or their will be a whole bunch of meow on Jose's part.

When I first read Acts 20:9 where Eutychus falls asleep during one of Paul's long sermons, I thought how could he? What sort of a screwup falls asleep during one of Paul's sermons? A boring pastor, or perhaps a disoragnized one, might bring one to sleep, but Paul, it just makes no sense. And then the worst part was not only falling asleep, but taking a header out the window and kicking the bucket. Talk about a bad day.
However, an experience I had made me rethink my stance. I fell asleep.. I had spent $$$ for a seminar, I knew the speaker, and he was really good I drove all night to get there, sat in the front row, was excited to here the guy talk, and promptly fell asleep. While their was no window for me to fall out of, my intention and my drive was to be 100% attentive, and I was for the first 10 minutes, and then promptly went out cold, waking up to hear the last 5 minutes.
Perhaps Eutychus worked all day, sure, he was a young guy (perhaps a teenager) and like many probably went to bed at sun down. He was probably all excited to see and hear Paul, so he chose a window, such that the breeze would help him stay awake. (Knowing that when I drive late at night, I have the window open to help me stay alert). He might have been all excited to see and hear Paul, yet his physical body just couldn't keep up.
Then again as teenagers, all of us have done foolish things. Maybe not sleeping in a window, but driving when we ought not to have, intentionally being in the wrong place at the way wrong time, or plain and simple not using good judgement. Euthychus might well have had his heart in the right place, but was just not aware of how tired he was.
After my sleep in seminar experiece, I have a lot more respect for Eutychus. Its also interesting to note, they waited for Paul to conclude (until dawn) rather than taking him home right away. I'm sure he was really awake for that part of Pauls sermon.

I wrote this on my main blog sometime ago, and thought I should report it here. I'm going to try and do some major web cleaning, and get my postings in categories, so older articles I have written will show up here from time to time.
Taken from my other blog, and written on June 20, 2004.

Here is the basic concept of what I learned in many years past. Wormwood translates to Chernobol in the Ukrane language... or does it
I'm a literalist, sometimes perhaps too much so. I am also of the belief that God is explicit when it is critical for our relationship with Jesus and his Word. In other part of the Bible, God uses the imagery of the time to guide and teach us. I think it best that unless God has made something explicit, we should think long, hard, and extremely prayerfully before going beyond what God has explicitly given us.
Onward with the science, and the word derivations.
Chernobyl was named for black grass, eg mugwart, not wormwood.
In my literalist frame of mine, and my extreme stance of the inerrancy of scripture. If God had wanted to give us this link in the 20th century to Chernobyl, he would have had John use Mugwart rather than Wordwood. Yet, Mugwart was nowhere near as commonly used nor found as Wormwood was in Biblical lands.
Is there a nuclear link, perhaps, is it critical for our relationship with Christ, imho it is not. Is it interesting thinking and reading about it, absolutely. However, we must not dwell extensively on such possibilities, and as a result, cause them to be a distraction from the Way which is only found through Jesus.
