i have become a person that reads the bible a lot, but as to memorization i am not practising it. whenever something strikes me, i will remember automatically.
remember it is gods good pleasure to work good deeds thru us who he has prepared in advance. so often he just gives us the right words at the right moment when we talk to people.
definitely we need the holy spirit to learn scripture to use it the way god wants us to use it.

jesus quoted without chapter and verse number.
the word is spirit.
What you said makes so much sense. Thank you so much.
Don't mean to step on any toes. But understanding what is meant is better than rote verbatim quotation. And when there is any question as to the precise wording of the verses then there is of course the Bible as the final authority.
John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
These guys studied to memorize what the scriptures said while oblivous as to what they meant. I recommend a reading or Bible on CD listening to the Bible all the way through as many times as you can. And in Bible study first pray the Holy Spirit to open the scriptures to you (John 16:13, 2 Peter 1:20-21). Also buy an exhaustive concordance. The pocket concordnaces or the one in the back of the Bible are essentially useless because seldom will they include the words or verses you seek. The exhaustive concordance has every word of scripture catalogued in it and many include original language lexicons.
I agree...quite often memorizing scripture is the first step in taking it out of context.
I was not sure which forum to post this in, so I hope it is ok here. I am looking for some tips on scripture memorization. I have a very hard time memorizing things because of some meds I am on. So if anyone has any ideas that might help, I would really appreciate it. I want to be able to carry the Word with me at all times, even if no bible on hand.

#1. Come to Word to contact the Lord and enjoy Him.
#2. Sing the scripture. Make up your own tunes.
#3. Memorization is work, it takes time and effort. It is analogous to playing the piano.
#4. Use audio tapes.
#5 The more scripture that gets into your long-term memory the better.
#6 Love the Lord first and formost. His words are life and truth.

I guess I have to list every aspect of every detail of every part of every doctrine to make sure everything is covered in every post.
Of course, memorization is not the total answer. No one here suggested otherwise. However, the OP asked about memorization, so that was the focus of the answers. What you suggest about concordance study and lexical studies is very important for a well-rounded understanding of the Scriptures. And of course, the Holy Spirit is the one who leads us into all truth, but the Holy Spirit does that through the Word. Therefore, memorized Scripture offers another opportunity for the Holy Spirit to lead, teach, guide, comfort, etc. (did I cover all the aspects? guess the "etc." takes care of everything doesn't it ) the believer.

Tyne Daly most recently of Judging Amy fame knows more scriptures by memory than perhaps most here ever will know. She learned it at the knee of her pastor grandfather.
Does she know what it means?
She is an atheist / agnostic.

understand I am not pooh poohing the notion of scripture memorization. the emphasis rather ought to be on understanding the concept than rote repitition. and what happens in a multi-translation siuation? what about when the translation is weak on representing the original greek or hebrew?
1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. KJV
1 Thessalonians 4:15 According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. NIV
And this is not just a more modern translation issue.
Genesis 22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. KJV
Genesis 22:7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. NIV
The Hebrew is actually more closely represented in the KJV than ANY of the new translations even the NKJV.
God provided HIMSELF a LAMB...
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Hebrews 10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, O God.’”
God indeed provided himself as the lamb!

I would second the idea of writings verses on index cards and stuff like that and posting them where you will see them every day. I have a buddy who does this with putting notes on his car's dash board. I think I might start doing something similar.
I also love the MaPaw site. I wish it was more personal though. Like for instance, you could login and have your own section of verses you're trying to memorize.
