Comforting Scriptures

The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts so I am helped, and my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
(Psalm 28:7)

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
(Matthew 5:4)

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

These scriptures helped me thru many difficult days:

Isaiah 41:10 & 13

KJV: 10)Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.  13)For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

NLT: 10)Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.  13)I am holding you by your right hand – I, the LORD your God. And I say to you, 'Do not be afraid. I am here to help you.

Romans Chapter 8:28,35,37,38-39

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who were crying with her, he was deeply moved and troubled. Jesus wept, too. John 11:33&35

I love this one, because I have felt Jesus sitting by my side, crying in sympathy with me when I was extremely grieved. It gave me immeasurable comfort, beyond what any human companion could have done. My God was sitting with me in my grief, crying because of MY tears!

Jesus doesn't watch our grief dispassionately from a distance, he gets among the mourners and cries with them. He feels their pain, he feels their grief, and he cries because they cry.

If I ever wonder how fully human Christ was/is, I remember this passage, and experience again the time he cried with me.

I love this translation of Romans 8:28:

And we know that God makes everything work together according to His purpose, for the good of those who are The Called. (Wilson's Translation)

It makes it clear that God's purposes are not thwarted by our tragedy, and that because He called us, He will make this bad thing somehow work out for our good. Our tragedy did not take God by surprise, but has a purpose in His plan for us.
