Hello, I'm new here. I was just wondering if any of you can point me in the direction (provide a link maybe) of any good Internet filtering software, preferrably one that's free and quick to install.
I have a child and I'm worried that he might accidentally stumble across indecent things on the Internet (we all know that there are lots of indecent things on the Internet).
Meh. From what I've read of the existing filtering software, I don't like. Not because they fail to block websites, but because they block a good amount of benign websites. At times it seems like the blocking of certain websites are politically or idealogically based. IIRC, there's one company that uses an encoded master list that not only can you not edit, you can't even see it.
Websense (http://ww2.websense.com/global/en/) has a 30-Day trial that you can download and try. My school used it when I was there and worked fairly well.
God Bless,
Justin.

My school uses websense. It's easy to find sites that should be blocked that aren't and find things that are blocked that shouldn't be. Heck, at my school, for a while it blocked most college websites under the "educational institution" category. I just have to ask, What the heck?
I think that you are the best monitoring tool. Until he learns responsibility, no program is a substitute for you watching what he does. That's my advice. But it really is up to you.

Filtering software is worthless. Go the hacker route and install a keystroke logger on the computer.
You don't have to type anything specific to find porn unfortunately. One of my old professors found porn when she was doing research on women's social issues!
