Filtering Internet websites for kids

If you are concerned about objectionable websites like pornography or violence, then know that Windows XP and Windows Vista have parental control built into their installations on your computer. If you want to activate them, then you simply go to the "start" menu, go to "settings"s, then "Control Panel". In the control panel an option of the parental controls should be on the menu. if you look on the left side of the window that opened up for the Control Panel there should be an option of going to the Classic View for the window. Click on it and it is a little easier to navigate to Parental Controls. There you set settings on a slider scale that gives option of low to high filtration. Clicking on the "options" hyperlink will let you be more specific in your internet filtering.

On XP and Vista there is the option of recording sites that different users on the computer use, this is the case if your username is the administrator with access to all parameters of the computer vs. a standard user you can set up through "user accounts" in the Control Panel. Settings up a standard user independent from your account and turning on the Parental Controls while you are logged in as an administrator allows the convenience of filtering objectionable web sites while keeping your files seperate from other users.

Hope this helps, send me a PM if you need a website to give further help to set this scenario up on your computer.

Just out of curiousity I have used the filter and set it to filter out smut sites and found that even on some beneign sites are filtered out if they refer to non-sexual things, but have to refer to reproduction topics. A little overkill of a filter, but better than not having it.

I have tried a bunch of filters, even some of the top rated ones like CyberSitter and CyberPatrol. They ALL fail! They let you in to sites like YouTube and you are able to watch soft-porn movies. Sure you can block YouTube, but there are YouTube copycats springing up almost everyday. The one solution is to create a "White List". This allows you to access ONLY the sites on the list. CyberPatrol has this option, Cybersitter does not. But if you have Windows Vista, you can create this list for FREE. And it works on FireFox as well. The computer Administrator can add sites - this administrator could be a parent, spouse, friend, or pastor. Go to schoolinyourhome.com/misc/free-internet-filters.html for step by step instructions on how to set this up. It is not hard and it works.

XP's filtering is a joke. Haven't had experience with Vista's, though I hear it is much more extensive.

The only real solution I can see is going with a Christian ISP that filters this stuff out. Unfortunately, most if them are dial-up. Absolutely any defense on the client end - which is the home end - can be circumvented, and I can do it with little effort.

No filtering software will work. Pornographic websites will always slip through the cracks, and a good bit of legitimate websites will be blocked.

I agree that no filtering software works. But creating a whitelist of allowed sites (with no others allowed) does work. I know this is pretty drastic, but if a husband is "cheating" on his wife via pornography, I think drastic measures are in order. So hubby works with the wife to create the "Allowed List" and wife is the administrator. And if needed, wife can log in the administrator account if one needs to search for something and/or find some additional sites for the "Allowed List". Yes, drastic. But better than a marriage breaking up. I also think this is a good way to go with any teen boy, including my own.

If you are running Windows XP, the least expensive filtering software I found that allows "Allowed Sites Only" is EA Filtering found at filter-internet.org - $25 one time with no re-occurring annual fees. The EA filter, just used as a filter, does not work well I must say. But I only use the "Allowed Sites Only" option for my teen son so it works for me.

Vista's works perfectly if you use the "Allowed Sites Only" option. I tried it. Go to
schoolinyourhome.com/misc/free-internet-filters.html
and give it a try.

I have not tried any Christian ISPs yet - can you recommend one?

I haven't found one. My current living situation precludes a switch to one, but when I get out of here I hope to find a good one.

Was playing with the Legal RTM of Windows 7.
They removed the Internet Filtering from the Parental Controls that they had in Vista

Now they are going to allow "Plug In" programs for that filtering, but none are included.

Guess I'll not be upgrading the Kids computers to 7.

Luke 10:27 (Love God Above All, And Your Neighbor as yourself)
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

Matthew 7:12 (Do unto others)
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Matthew 5:43-48 (Pray for those that persecute you)
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Luke 6:27-29 (Love your enemies.)
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.

If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason? Reckless and incompetent expounders of holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books.
Isaiah 8:12-13 (NIV) "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread."

pgp, have you demoed Kaspersky Internet Security? I just installed the latest 2010 version, and it has a pretty good "Parental Controls" module that let's you blacklist/whitelist pretty well. Copied from the Help file:

Parental Control
This window groups the settings of the Parental Control component. You can perform the following actions by editing the settings:

disable Parental Control;
manage profiles;
modify the restriction level;
restrict viewing of web resources;
create the list of allowed web addresses;
create the list of blocked web addresses;
export / import the lists of web addresses;
select the categories of blocked web addresses;
use the heuristic analysis;
select the action to be performed when attempting to access blocked web addresses;
restrict the access time.
Might be worth you checking out...
